The Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base is a gimbal-type tripod head that incorporates an elevated tilt mechanism and adjustable platform to make the camera/lens' center of gravity and tilt axis of the head be perfectly aligned.

Things once thought of as impossible with a ball head are nothing short of mundane with a Wimberley, because a weightless camera/lens combo (even a 600mm f/4 w/ large body) can literally be controlled with one finger. Point the rig where you want and take the hand away, and it stays exactly where you put it.

The Version II head is more compact and lightweight, features a redesigned panning base, "soft-touch" knobs, and includes a built-in Arca-type compatible quick release base. An Arca-type quick release plate is required and is available separately.

The built-in industry-standard Arca-type quick release clamp makes it compatible with the many different plates available from Arca-Swiss, Acratech , Kirk, Wimberly, Really Right Stuff, Foba, etc.

The head does not have separate controls for tension and locking, but the locking controls deliver smooth resistance with diminished "stick-slip".

The overall height of the head is 9.25", with the lens platform adjustable from 3.5 to 7.1". The centerline of a balanced lens will be approximately 8.4" above the bottom of the head.
Distance from the mounting surface of the platform to the tilt axis: Adjustable from 1.1 to 4.8".

The head's redesigned panning base has zero play and the pan locking knob has been moved to the side of the head; this allows the user to easily operate both knobs with the same hand.

Lobed "soft-touch" knobs provide a more comfortable grip and perform better when using gloves.

Powder coated/anodized finish.

Made in the U.S.A.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If I use this gimbal head is there a need to have a ball head at all?

A: A gimbal head is designed to only work with long lenses that have a tripod collar. If you use shorter lenses you will need another head like a ball head.

Q: 2. Can you place a camera body directly on this? (Nikon D5)

A: Yes, with the appropriate quick release plate attached to your camera. You should be able to look up which plate you need based on your camera model.

Q: 3. I have a Canon 70-200 and a Canon 100-400 which bases do i need

A: Wimberley suggests using their P-20 lens plate (B&H # WIQRPP20) for both the Canon 100-400mm and 70-200mm f/2.8 lenses.

Q: 4. Hi, Could you please tell me what makes this gimbal so expensive over others? Like material, ease of use or anything to justify the price. Thanks.

A: I don't know why this is so expensive. My colleagues recommended it because of easy to use, durability, and reliability. It is extremely stable for a big lens and heavy bodied camera. Wonderful. Don't waste your time with anything else. You images could suffer. Do it right the first time. Just my opinion.

Q: 5. What is the material this head is made from??? Most of the competitors show that info, but is unavailable on this page in B and H. Thank you.

A: The upright is constructed of durable metal with the exception of the rubber knobs. The arm appears to be constructed of a lighter-weight metal and the knobs are plastic. Given the weight, the metal is not aluminum. The product is top notch and worth the money if you can afford it.

Q: 6. How much does the WH-200 weigh? My friend has the Jobu Heavy Duty Mark IV, and he loves it. Which is the better gimbal mount? The Jobu is $130 less, btw.

A: The Wimberley WH-200 Gimbal Tripod Head II with Quick Release Base weighs 3.1 lb / 1.4 kg. Both that and the Jobu Design DMG-HD4 Heavy Duty Gimbal Head MK IV are very good gimbals. Wimberley as a brand is top rated for gimbals and plates. And it can support much more weight at no more than 100 lb (45kg).

Q: 7. Will this tripod head work on a monopod or even a ground pod? And where can I find the chart to look for the accessory quick release plate for my lenses ....Canon 100 to 400 mm IS II. Thanks

A: It works wonderfully with a Monopod, as long as you get the right monopod. The fiddly ones start with a mediocre diameter tube and come in many sections for portability, and thus the end section has a very small diameter and causes instability with a heavy lens, body and gimbal combo. With the right monopod, such as some of the Gitzo's like the GM2542 Series 2 or even better, the GM4532 Series 4 you will have no problems. It's great in fact. I'd also get a spike and use the side mount. Much faster in operation, especially if you adjust the up/down height a lot in a day. I personally consider the ProMediaGear TR42 monopod the best there is and much better with a gimbal than the normal monopod heads. But keep in mind that the TR42 starts with a 1.65" (!) diameter carbon fiber tube and is rated for 70 pounds.

Q: 8. Hello.I have a Manfrotto 055XDB tripod. I wonder if I have to get a newer one or this will work with the WH-20? Thank you in anticipation.

A: I Have no information on the Manfrotto 055XDB, but most tripods came with a reversible connecting screw at the top.The Wimberley WH20 should be attached to the tripod base through a 3/8 screw. If your tripod does have a reversible (1/4 versus 3/8 screw) you should just select the appropriate side as the WH 20 needs a 3/8 screw to installedIf not, is just a matter to buy and install a reducer bushing

Q: 9. I have Mefoto C1350 Road trip tripod and Canon 100-400mm plus 1.4 Extender. Is my Tripod sturdy enough to use with the Wimberly Gimbal Head?

A: I'm not sure. I have a Gitzo GT5543XLS Systematic Series 5 Carbon Fiber Tripod (Extra Long). It has a load capacity of 88lbs. Yours has a weight capacity of 17lb. Its sort of like comparing apples and oranges. I don't want to say yes, but I can't say no. The Wimberly is made for much heavier lenses than the 100400. I use it for a 300mm f/2.8 and a 600mm f/4.0. Both of these lenses are much heavier and require good support. The Wimberly is certainly up to the task of holding any lens you put on it.

Q: 10. What other accessory do I need besides...I got a canon 100 to 400mm lenses with 1.6 X and will get the 600mm down on the road. Thax

A: When I ordered the WH-200, I also ordered two quick release plates (used to attach the camera lens collar to the tripod head). Plates: P50, item#WIQRPP50. Two plates so I have one for the 100-400mm lens, and one for a 300mm F2.8 lens. Of course, you need a tripod to attach the WH-200 to.

I use this with my 500 f4 lens and a Gitzo tripod. This head is wonderful. I am able to balance the lens easily and the head holds it in place.

Incredibly smooth, has a nice, quality feel to it, I can't say much that hasn't already been said. It is, after all the gold standard
I'm glad I spent the extra money to get it instead of a cheaper one, I'm sure it will probably outlast me

The Wimberley Gimble head is an excellent product. It is sturdy, materials excellent, and best of all, alt works flawlessly. Although limited use thus far, I am totally satisfied. It was about one-half the price of  a competitor, whose products I have purchased for several years. Nice!

I use it with my Nikon D750 attached to a 200-500 lens, and a tripod. I didnt realize how heavy this thing is. Not sure if I want to carry this rig very far due to the weight. There are plenty of parks and nature centers near me (southern California).

This is an excellent Tripod Head because the design and quality provides the most security against your expensive lens falling off. The design allows for completely balancing the lens while supporting the weight without any stress on the lens foot and keeps the center of gravity exactly on the base of the head and center of the tripod. I think this is the best design to minimize any chance of your lens falling off the release base. There is nothing to cause stress points or fatigue from repeated use. The full range of motion to follow birds in flight easily and without camera shake is as good as it gets. I would be very anxious to place my expensive lens on many of the other Tripod Heads even though many of them are well made and versatile, simply because this design supports the weight so perfectly and balanced to avoid the lens accidentally releasing from the base. This is a simple and elegant Tripod Head Design with quality built into all the moving parts and I highly recommend it.

Beautifully made. On the Gitzo GT4543LS tripod, makes chasing small birds with a big zoom much easier!

This is the gimbal I should have paid to buy in the first place versus now replacing another that proved to be a waste of money. The price put me off, but, like a tripod, investing in the right product saves money in the long run.
