A: The ShutterBoss receiver doesnt need to be on the hot shoe in order to function: it simply needs to be plugged into the accessory port of the D90. You would want to use some Velcro, tape, or something to attach the receiver to the camera or tripod, though, so it doesnt hang from the cord.
