A: Yes, you can customize the L-Fn button to AF-ON. So you can focus with the lens L-Fn, and use the shutter to take the shot. This will be in the menu, under ( CUSTOM SETTING MENU ) Controls F

A: While yes, it is focus by wire, and while yes, I hate focus by wire, I recently picked up the 24-70/2.8 GM. That lens is also focus by wire, but unlike all it's little brothers and sisters, this one is not accelerated. If you spin the ring to a specific point on the lens, it will focus the same distance every time. I think Sony realized that they had made a huge mistake with all the preceding lenses (especially since they were marketing these cameras to the video community as well; the video community is heavily manual focus), and adjusted some parameters to do away with the whole acceleration thing because NO ONE LIKES IT. I'm so happy that this was addressed with the GM series. It had me super worried about my purchase until I held it in my hands.
