A tremendously flexible standard zoom for APS-C-format DSLRs, the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM from Canon pairs the 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. Benefitting this design is a sophisticated optical layout, which includes both Ultra-Low Dispersion glass and aspherical elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the zoom range. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in bright environments.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 17-55mm is also characterized by its advanced three stop-effective Image Stabilizer system to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Versatile wide-angle to portrait-length zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs and offers a 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.

Two Ultra-Low Dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.

Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to three shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design and optimized focusing algorithms, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Being that this is for an apsc camera, does that mean that it is 17-55 and not multiplied by the 1.6x crop factor. Ik that with full frame lenses it is, but being that this is for an apsc I'm just confirming that it is true 17-55

A: Whether this is an aps-c lens or full frame, you still have to do the math on a cropped sensor camera. You will always have to do the magnification factor with any lens, for example 17-55mm x1.5 crop factor.

Q: 2. What would this lens be best used for in photography?

A: Because of the large opening of the lens 2.8, I bought it to use at stage plays that my daughter and grandson appear in. It works perfectly, to ensure the sharpness of the image, I have to jack up the ISO on my 7D Mark II. Great lens.

Q: 3. How many stops of image stabilization?

A: This lens has about 3 stops of stabilization.

Q: 4. I have 77D,kit lenses 18-55,55-250,50 mm prime,tamron 16-300 ,would this lens be worth buying?

A: The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens is a good lens for you to add to your collection if you are shooting in low light.

Q: 5. I read in an internet thread that the 80D has focus issues with this lens. Has anybody faced problems with this lens and the 80D?

A: In reading the reports, we would say that the issue either is a maladjusted new lens or a used one in need of adjustment. While we caution everyone to test their new camera vigorously, actual problems with any new camera and new lens is very rare. We see no red flags for buying this combination.

Q: 6. Will this Lens work on a Canon EOS Rebel T1i / EOS 500D?

A: Yes.

Q: 7. Is this lens compatible with the Canon 1 D Mark 4?

A: No. The 1D Mark IV does not support EF-S lenses. You'll need an EF mount lens.

Q: 8. Is this lens compatible with Canon 40D and or 6D? I currently have a 40D and thinking of upgrading to 6D soon. Thanks

A: This lens will work well on the 40D, but will vignette on the 6D. This is due to the smaller APS-C-specific image circle found on the lens. If you are going to be upgrading to a full frame camera, an EF lens would be necessary (as opposed to an EF-S, which will not work):Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM LensB&H # CA241054LIS ? Mfr # 0344B002This is a compatible lens in roughly the same focal and price range.

Q: 9. Is this the 2nd version of this lens? Or is there only one version? Anyone know when or if another version will be made or released?

A: From what I am finding, there has only been one version of the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 lens. I havent seen an announcement from Canon about a new version of this lens, so wouldnt be able to say if they plan on releasing one anytime soon.

Q: 10. Will this lens work with MFT mount?

A: This is a Canon EF mount lens and is not natively compatible with a Micro Four Thirds camera. However, you can use this lens on a Micro Four Thirds camera with the use of an adapter. eeeeee

I would buy this lens again

Great in low-light situations. Images are sharp, and built well for non-L lens.

This is the best general purpose lens on the market for crop cameras. Image stabilizer works great, and IS does improve wide angle low light shots.Because it has f2.8 it is, without question, a better choice for crop cameras than the 24-105F4L, in spite of the fact that it is not as well made. Images on mine are quite sharp even wide open, although at f8 they are razor sharp. I use the hood and have kept a filter attached so I have not had any dust or flare problems. If you are concerned about weight or price, my next choice would be to buy the 24mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.4 primes. BTW ... B&H is by far the best camera store on the planet! Great products, great prices ...

I love this lens! f/2.8 plus the added IS makes it a wonderful low-light lens. The wide-angle provides a great addition to the 28-135mm lens included with the 40D. Focus is fast and sharp and the decent zoom range makes it a nice lens to keep on the camera. The build is high quality and the glass is great, and for the price, I wish they would have made it an L-series lens (even if it is EF-S). Also, for the price, a lens hood should be included!

Upgraded from the kit EF 28-135mm lens. Other 2.8 zoom lens I considered was the full frame compatible EF 24-70mm (but it weighs twice as much, isn't as wide on a crop sensor camera, and lacks IS), the Tamron 28-75mm (probably better for portaits, but lacks IS, no USM, no distance info for ETTL flash, and is supposedly warmer in color), and the Tamron 17-50mm (no IS, no USM, and no distance info). Choose the EF-S 17-55mm because I may never go full frame, and was reviewed as sharper than EF 24-70mm along with the other advantages. Only have had the lens for one month, but it has met my lofty expectations for such an expensive upgrade. The pictures seem sharp wide open and the bokeh is great. The IS should make this a great low light lens as well, although I haven't tested this yet. My biggest concern was the reported dust issue, but I always use filters on all my lenses and I don't see any dust.

Upgraded from the kit lens on my 450D, I could not be more happy with this lens. Super fast zoom, excellent in low light, and exceptionally clear. Have used it for candid outdoor photography as a walk around lens and could not be happier with the flexibility and build of the lens. It's not light, but the build quality it good and was not an issue to carry around for a few days. I suspect this will be attached to the body for a while

It took some convincing to get me to switch from the kit lens EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 which was essentialy free. I borrowed a 17-55 from a friend and had to have my own so I bought it. Now it is part of a pair of walk around lenses I use. When touring, I use my EF 24-105 f/4L outside and switch to the 17-55 for the 2.8 when going inside. Both lenses produce excellent results on my 40D.
