A tremendously flexible standard zoom for APS-C-format DSLRs, the EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM from Canon pairs the 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range with a bright f/2.8 constant maximum aperture. Benefitting this design is a sophisticated optical layout, which includes both Ultra-Low Dispersion glass and aspherical elements to significantly reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations for improved clarity and sharpness throughout the zoom range. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in bright environments.

Beyond the optical attributes, this 17-55mm is also characterized by its advanced three stop-effective Image Stabilizer system to minimize the appearance of camera shake. Also complementing handling is a sophisticated ring-type USM, which provides quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus override.

Versatile wide-angle to portrait-length zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs and offers a 27.2-88mm equivalent focal length range.

Bright constant f/2.8 maximum aperture affords consistent illumination throughout the zoom range and also affords greater control over depth of field for working with selective focus techniques.

Two Ultra-Low Dispersion glass elements noticeably reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for high clarity and color fidelity.

Three aspherical elements minimize spherical aberrations and distortions for improved sharpness and accurate rendering.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to three shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.

A ring-type Ultrasonic Motor (USM), along with an internal focusing design and optimized focusing algorithms, is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.

Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this the 2nd version of this lens? Or is there only one version? Anyone know when or if another version will be made or released?

A: From what I am finding, there has only been one version of the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 lens. I havent seen an announcement from Canon about a new version of this lens, so wouldnt be able to say if they plan on releasing one anytime soon.

Q: 2. How many stops of image stabilization?

A: This lens has about 3 stops of stabilization.

Q: 3. I have a canon 80d and I use the 50mm 1.8 but wanted to upgrade and get this lens is it a good one or you guys could recommend something better because I need to take my blogging game to the next level

A: Just bought this lens for use on my 7DmkII and it is worth every single penny. You can believe all you read about its sharpness across the range, fast zoom, and build quality. Two concerns from me:- For $900 bucks you'd expect a lens hood for crying out loud.- No lock? Lens creep hasn't been an issue yet but the lens is brand new. People complain about the weight but I typically carry a 100-400L or 70-200L 2.8 so this lens is a featherweight for me.Throw on an extension tube (or not) and it shoots decent macro as well. It's a must have if you're a crop sensor fan, which I am.

Q: 4. I want to verify that this lens is compatible with my canon 5D Mark III

A: The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 lens is only compatible with the APS-C size sensor Canon DSLRs released since 2003. It is not compatible with Canon full frame cameras such as the 5D III. The Canon full frame cameras are only compatible with the EF lenses.

Q: 5. f2.8 on this lens compared to Canon 50mm 1.8 makes a difference? f2.8 on this lens feels less bright. let me know if anyone noticed it. Tested on Canon 80d

A: This lens is less bright compared to a 50mm 1.8. However you do have the flexibility of zoom.

Q: 6. Will the EF-S17-55 operate perfectly with a Sony Fs7? Image stabilization and auto focus are a must. I also need a recommendation for a Canon to Sony E Mount

A: That, lens will work on the FX7. The adapter is very important as to what works and does not work. This is a good adapter. But like most it does not work with every lens. Q: 7. Will this Lens work on a Canon EOS Rebel T1i / EOS 500D?

A: Yes.

Q: 8. I'm wanting a lens for my granddaughter's wedding and other future events is this the lens for my Canon 80d?

A: Yes, works with my 80d. I love the lens!

Q: 9. Is this lens compatible with a Canon 70D?

A: Yes. It has become my go to utility lens.

Q: 10. Is this lens compatible with the Canon 1 D Mark 4?

A: No. The 1D Mark IV does not support EF-S lenses. You'll need an EF mount lens.

Like others, I agonized a little over spending the money. The IS sold me! I have owned this lens for just three weeks and have put it through the tests. I tried hard not to like it but found it impossible! Colors are unbelievable and the sharpness is incredible. Focus is fast and right on. I spent several days on the North Shores of Lake Superior and returned with post card quality photos right out of the camera. Little or no PP required on most. I shot several hand held evening shots while taking a carraige ride which again came out crystal clear. I compared with my Canon prime 50mm 1.4 in studio. I found it to be everything I wanted and the added range makes it a perfect match for portraits. This lens will rarely come off my camera! Size and weight is not an issue for me like some others have mentioned. It is one of the larger lenes I own. I personally don't find that to be a dissadvantage but For the money, it should have come with a lens hood! My only regret, I wish I would have purchased this lens earlier and saved my money on less expensive alternatives.

I use this lens everyday. It's great for portraits, and events and it's great for traveling. It's sharp and feels well made. It's not quite an L lens but it's pretty close and it goes great with cropped bodies like the 40d. it's worth the investment

The 17-55 f/2.8 IS is a fantastic lens for crop bodies like my 40D! The focal length is perfect for walkaround and general purpose shooting, and on top of being fast, the IS makes this a real killer for indoor and low-light shots. I have really shaky hands, so I was blown away by how sharp the images were at 1/40 handheld. IMO, the price is justifiable, judging by the results.

I bought this lens on a recommendation of a friend and couldn't be happier with it. I've used it to shoot photos in museums, outside in gardens, on a nature tour, in low light areas and many other places. It has never let me down except for those times I wish I had a telephoto lens :)

This lens is very sharp and give consistent results time after time for the last 20 months that i own it! Used it for weddings, wildlife (although rarely), portraits, street photos, sports and family shots, and it never failed me!! the images are always crisp and sharp, with great colors. I first used t on the 20D and it was great, but found its true colors and abilities on the 40D. The only down side to it is that's it's not an L and not built as one, although it's quite rugged. Many complain on dust in the lens, well for the 20 month I've had it and I used it in every kind of environment, i have no dust inside. It's fair to say I had a B+W UV slim filter on it since days one! the IS is amazing! what can i say.....no complaints, great lens!

A 28mm to 130 mm lens is my general purpose lens, and I have difficulty in covering areas in close quarters with it. The 17 mm to 55 mm lens fills that gap. It is quick and easey to use. The pictures are tack sharp, even in low light. This lens is becoming my general purpose lens.

As this is the second, but only lens I own, I have found this lens suits itself as a good all around lens on a crop sensor camera (40d). It gives a much wider view than the kit 28-135 lens and provides a noticeable increase in image quality/sharpness. The 2.8 aperture allows you to capture images in decently low lighting situations that would normally require a flash. It also allows you to create a very shallow depth of field. The construction of the lens looks and feels of noticeably higher quality than that of the kit lens. Unfortunately, the rugged nature and high quality construction seems to have added to the overall weight and would not be a good lens for a smaller camera, such as an XSi or XTI. You may be able to pull it off if you have the battery grip on those smaller cameras, however. The filter size is also HUGE. Its amazing to see how large this thing actually is in person. Although Id say this is a great all around lens, I could only wish that it could have covered just a tad bit more on the zoom side, making a little more room for macro capability. I commonly use this lens for nightlife photography, normal walk around, city, landscape, just to name some of my uses. The ability to use that 2.8 aperture for low light shots is really what sets this lens apart from higher number aperture lenses. Not to mention, the auto focus speed in general is a huge improvement over the kit lens.
