The Audio-Technica ATH-R70x Pro Reference Headphones are a professional-grade open-back reference design that feature specially designed 45mm drivers in acoustically transparent housings fashioned from aluminum honeycomb mesh to provide an accurate and natural sound. The carbon composite resin in the design improves structural rigidity to provide a detailed transient response. High-efficiency magnets with a pure alloy magnetic circuit design helps reduce distortion and ensure an accurate and extended frequency response of 5 to 40,000 Hz.

For comfort, they feature the company's 3D wing support system and breathable fabric earpads. The featherlight design weighs only 210 grams without the cable, and the robust construction of the headphones make them suitable for long-term studio use. The unique dual-sided detachable locking cable is L/R signal independent to ensure proper stereo orientation. The headphones come with a protective carrying pouch.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do these headphones fit on ear or over the ear?

A: They fit round the ear- they are cicumaural. They are comfortable too.

Q: 2. Does it work with cellphone?

A: Yes without a glitch!

Q: 3. How do these compare to the M40x in terms of neutrality, accuracy, and mix translation? Which is better for professional video and audio work? (No M50x comparisons please)

A: If you liked the 40', s then you will simply LOVE the new Audio-Technica ATH-M70x Pro headphones. Overall frequency response is improved with no discernable compromise to efficiency. These will get loud, but will remain virtually distortionless on most content. They weigh only about an ounce more and are still very comfortable even with their larger 45mm drivers. Fairly flat but not a bit bright in the upper midrange. Good detail too.

Q: 4. Would you recommend these for field monitors? Do they block outside noise well?

A: These ATH m70x headphones do block outside noise very well, and will yield very accurate sound for field monitoring. If you are buying headphones that will be used exclusively for field monitoring, you might also want to consider the ATH-m40x as a less costly option, which also folds down smaller for transport. https://bhpho.to/3LwgMRY

Q: 5. Can I use this headphones like a monitor. Example: I play in church with other musicians and I want to eliminate the monitor speakers and use headphones instead.

A: Sure you can! I got this headphones last december and im loving it! This headphone is great to eliminate the external sounds so you can focus on what you are listening. I use to edit TV series.

Q: 6. made in Japan or Taiwan?

A: This headphone was manufactured in Japan

Q: 7. This headphone, focal spirit pro, msr7, or Sony 7520? Clarity, neutrality, and quality. I need the truest and clearest sound.

A: Hi,I love these headphones. They are very true studio monitor headphones. The bass response is good not woofy at all.Just clear. Very little sound leakage, comfortable and the multi cords are very convenient.

Q: 8. Does Audio-Technica make wireless headphone?

A: Audio Technica does not currently offer any wireless headphones.

Q: 9. Are these still being manufactured?

I brought these home, put on one of my tracks and half way through had to check if my Adam A7x Monitors were on or off, it sounds that good. I actually thought the Adams had to be on in the background. I can see these being my new go to cans. I just shelved my AKG712's

Excellent value. This open back headphone produces spacious and detailed sound with solid and none intrusive base. It is better than I expected at this price point.

I can see why these have been around for so many years. This headphone is mostly made of plastic, but it appears to be quality plastic. The sound reproduction of music is detailed and the bass is accentuated just ever so slightly so as to enhance the music experience without distorting it with too much bass. Stays on my head comfortably, not too much side pressure on the head and ears. These are really a good set of headphones, plain and simple.

Compared to my previously well rated Sony headphones these are the bomb! Sound is much more calibrated to how things sound in home stereos and car radios! A well priced option for head phone mixing applications and anyone looking for accurate and great sound phones! The ear pads could be a tad softer?

I've not had them for a really long time, but I bought these because the room my little studio is in doesn't do well with monitors. They're incredibly lightweight and the sound is fantastic. Nothing is exaggerated and since these are my first pair of open back headphones I'm really impressed with the way they perform without being fatiguing, even after several hours of wear. I must echo the sentiment that the cups are slightly on the small side, but the fit is still superb and I'd absolutely recommend these as an excellent introduction to how good headphones can actually be.

I have had the R70x for about six months now, so definitely past the honeymoon period (audiophile wise). That is the primary reason for holding off on a review until now. It is very easy to get excited over a new product and write a gushing review; been guilty of that myself. This headphone's main strength is a neutral, yet non-fatiguing presentation. Bass is relatively flat, but has the ability to punch when called for IF properly driven. I usually drive these with a Schiit Valhalla OTL tube amp as it mates well with the 470 ohm impedance. They do want power, but I usually listen at somewhat louder ( I'd like to say realistic) levels. Neutral midrange with neither too forward or distant vocals. Upper treble might be somewhat rolled off, especially compared to my Beyerdynamic DT1770, DT1350 cans, but those tend to be brighter (and fatigue sooner). I feel the soundstage is very good and has some airiness to it. Not as wide as the now gone AKG Q701, but better in all other aspects. I did feel the stock pads were a tad small and just a little rough. I have replaced them with the Shure 1540 alcantara pads. More comfy with minimal change in sound signature. They are the most comfortable headphone I have had. I fiddle less with the fit than all previous cans. I've gone through many headphones in the past few years ( much to my wife's chagrin). But this one might finally be a keeper. In fact, it's the first can I've thought about buying again for a backup, but as soon as I do that AT will probably come out with a successor :/ In conclusion, highly recommended.

After about two years of use, I have to say these are the most comfortable headphones I own. I regularly forget I am wearing them! The sound quality on these is impressive. They are definitely darker than any of my other headphones, and ever so slightly darker than what I would call neutral. Perhaps the best analogy is the U47 microphone. However, that's not to say it's overly bassy; I tested about a dozen open backs at B&H in person at the time and these had the least 'bass bleed', where bass frequencies overwhelm the low-mids, while also having some of the most 'polite' highs, or as others put it, 'non-fatiguing'. They are particularly pleasant on classical and jazz, and provide quite good detail and sound stage. Most certainly an upgrade on my ancient Q701's! However, they are definitely on the 'slow' side, lacking the transient clarity of brighter or higher-end headphones, so less analytical and more enjoyable- they do make your music sound 'better', but not necessarily show all the flaws. For that reason, I'd say they're not necessarily the be-all-end-all of mixing/mastering headphones, but for listening otherwise, they are excellent. Other benefits include their remarkably small size and aforementioned light weight; they also have massively less bleed than my other open-backs, and I have even used them for tracking without much more bleed than my closed backs do.
