Manual focus, catadioptric optical design telephoto lens with fixed f/8 aperture, which is compatible with select camera focus peaking systems and in-body multi-axis advanced image stabilization systems.

Multilayered anti-reflection coating for efficient light intake and reduced flare, plus high-reflectivity silvered coating and a protective antioxidant layer on the back side of mirrored surfaces for long performance life.

Minimum focusing distance of 45.3" and magnification 0.4x can capture small objects, while the 400mm focal length reduces the possibility of casting a shadow on the subject

Catadioptric design and construction creates a smooth and unusual donut-shaped bokeh

Wide focus ring provides smooth rotation range of 270°

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I already have T adapters for several cameras (e.g., Canon 5DIV and RF). Will this lens work with those adapters or only with Tokina's adapter?

A: This would be compatible with the T adapters that you already have.

Q: 2. Does this include a t-mount adapter, or is that purchased separately?

A: The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Canon EF has a Canon EF mount. It is not a T mount lens.

Q: 3. Can the lens hood be reversed and stored on the lens?

A: The Tokina SZX 400mm f/8 Reflex MF Lens for Nikon F's lens cap cannot be reversed and stored on the lens.

Q: 4. I just got this lens for an Olympus EM1-ii. Can't seem to get the focus peaking to work. Works fine with the one other manual focus lens I have. Is there some limitation with being 400mm or f/8?

A: According to Olympus, they state this must be an isolated lens issue. There is no in-camera reason for lack of focus peaking. You simply need to customize a button to focus peaking usage. Tap the selected customized button to turn on focus peaking, and tap the button again to turn off the focus peaking feature. If there is still no focus peaking, then it is really a lens issue as focus peaking depends on contrast to work; no electrical lens contacts are needed.

Q: 5. Is this apse or full frame? Listing says both.

A: Hi, this is a Full Frame lens.

Q: 6. I have the M50 therefore this would require the adapter it comes with plus the ef to m adapter. Would this work?

A: Yes, this comes with the EF adapter, thus you'd just need the EF to EF-M adapter to get it on to your Canon EOS M50.

Q: 7. Does this come with a lens cap, or do I have to buy one separately?

A: A lens cap is included with this lens.

Q: 8. Do this need and/or come with an adaptor for Fujifilm. Is this lens auto focused, or totally manual focus?

A: This lens comes with an adapter and is manual focus only.

Q: 9. Has anyone used this lens on a 90D or another camera that doesn't have focus peaking or vibration control? If so, were you able to get reasonably sharp photos without camera shake being an issue?

A: It's definitely going to be a bit more difficult focusing with a 90D or DSLR that doesn't have stabilization or focus peaking. I would recommend using a tripod and a shutter remote to maximize stability. Even with focus peaking and stabilization, the lens still requires critical focusing.

Q: 10. Is the "donut-shaped bokeh" what we otherwise know as "circles of confusion"?

A: No. The sharpest point of focus on a camera's sensor would be a single point on the camera's sensor. "Circles of confusion" describes the small area of what our eyes would perceive to still be in "acceptable focus," but which do not fall as single points of focus on the sensor. They are circles slightly larger than a single dot (point), but which are small enough to still be perceived as in focus. Bokeh describes the quality of the out-of-focus area in an image, so "donut-shaped bokeh" are not perceived as being in focus and is not considered circles of confusion. --- The distinctive shape of the bokeh from mirror lenses comes from the design of the lens and the placement of the reflecting mirror in the center of the image. Light enters the optical tube, passes a small mirror, and strikes a concave mirror at the rear of the tube. The light is focused back toward the small mirror and reflected back through a hole in the concave mirror where the camera or eyepiece is mounted. The result is bokeh with a bright edge and a relatively dark center (similar to a donut).

I bought this lens for an upcoming trip to Italy and Greece. I needed something to cover pretty much all eventualities and the 28-400 seems to fit the bill. I ran some test images, and my wife used it for some shots at a Little League game, and it is acceptably sharp at all focal lengths. At 400 mm, it is definitely sharper at f/11 than at f/8 but still very usable. I am planning on using it in good light - and the Nikon Z7ii handles high ISO very well - so I am not overly concerned about the 'slowness' of the lens at longer focal lengths. Overall, and at the price point, it seems like Nikon has a winner with this lens.

When I grab the camera for a casual day of errands, a brief walk, or family gatherings I always take this lens. It’s not the sharpest or fastest etc but you will not miss a shot with it.

I have only taken a dozen or so photos inside and outside (outside to compare 28mm versus 400mm).. A very good lens for the price in my opinion. I decided it is my new standard lens for ready use on my Nikon Z6.

This is a very versatile lens with a focal range of 28mm to 400mm. On my first outing it was the only lens I took but it was a sunny day. This Lens performed very well at all focal lengths while shooting in the sun of the day. But as a slow lens, performance tailed off as dusk came as expected. I found it compact and easy to handle even at the longest focal length . Although not a Nikkor “S” the Picture quality was exceptional for a lens at this price point.

Great lens for hiking. Good sharpness thru the range. Sharper than the Z 24-200 in my opinion.

I received my lens a week ago Friday. Tuesday, I took it on a trip. Immediately, I loved this lens. I love that it's focal range negates carrying other lenses for 95% of my photography needs. While it is a little heavier than the 24-200 mm lens it replaced, the range more than makes up for the added weight. It focuses well and quickly. In short, this lens is my go-to lens for most of my photography needs.

This is a great lens. It is the lens I will use in my travels, because it gives me a great choice of focal lengths. This is the only lens I will need in my travel backpack.

I'm using this lens with a Z8 and my normal telephoto is the Nikon 400mm f 4.5 Z lens which is the best telephoto lens I have ever owned. I was looking for a telephoto zoom to compliment the 400/4.5 and thought I'd give the Nikon Z 28-400mm a try. I am flabbergasted by the image quality of this lens considering its zoom range. Is it the image quality of the 400mm prime? No. Is it good enough for me? Yes. I can walk around my wife's garden and go from near macro to 400mm telephoto and zoom for composition all in one light weight lens. I highly recommend this lens for its intended purposes.
