Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Just received this external drive and it doesn't work. Message says it cannot be read! Is there a fix ... or should I just return it?

A: Not sure if you are Mac or PC, but,I just connected mine via USB to my Mac desktop, and it showed and accepted data with no formatting or issues. I would return it. Even if you can figure out a work-around or fix, seems like a price point where you would want it to work out of the box, or at least be given instructions by G-Raid as to the booting process...

Q: 2. Is USB 3.0 port backward compatible with 2.0?

A: Yes.

Q: 3. How difficult is it to change the configuration from RAID 0 RAID 1?

A: It's not straightforward at all. I had to call the company to be walked through the process but they were very helpful.

Q: 4. I purchased two of these and plan to run one drive in Raid 0 and one drive in Raid 1 and daisy chain them with a thunderbolt 3 connection. Does anyone know if this will slow down the performance on the Raid 0 drive?

A: It will not slow anything down, Thunderbolt 3 has plenty of bandwidth left even using two of them in RAID 0 or RAID 1.

Q: 5. What are the actual read/write speeds for this specific thunderbolt 2 drive (8TB) in RAID 0? It says up to 440MB/s but that could be for the 16TB version.

A: G-Technology does not independently list the transfer speeds of the different capacities. Generally they provide real life statistics with their benchmarks. As this is a new drive, I was not able to locate third party verification of the speeds at this time.

Q: 6. How many watts of power can this unit deliver via the thunderbolt 3 port?

A: I am sorry but this device does not provide power to the unit, it is only used as a Daisy Chain.

Q: 7. Any real downsides to running the drive as JOBD, using software like carbon copy to use the second drive as a clone and backup daily? In JOBD, does my computer recognize two drives on the desktop? Im kinda paranoid running RAID 1 because if the RAID controller gets damaged or something, itll cost thousands to recover my data. I know its unlikely, but this company doesnt offer data recovery with their warranty, theyll just give you a new unit. If I run JOBD, I ASSUME I could swap one of the drives into a standard controller/housing and recover my data?

A: I assume you could do as you say, running it as JBOD and using CCC to back-up but you face the issue of having only a single copy of the data for up to a day (until your scheduled back-up runs).Running RAID 1 gives you 'immediate' mirroring to protect your data against a hard disk failure. What is more likely to fail? The hard disk or the RAID controller? If you want to do JBOD, you are paying a lot of extra money for this unit and wouldn't be getting maximum value out of it. I ran it as RAID 1, so i took advantage of what the drive offers, and used CCC to back that up to another single hard drive for 'backup'.

Q: 8. How do you change it from RAID 0 to RAID 1? I dont see any hardware toggle/switch/dial.

A: Hi, you would need the RAID Configration Utility, which you can freely download from our website :a href= http://support.g-technology.com/support/g-raid-usb-removable target= _blank http://support.g-technology.com/support/g-raid-usb-removable/aThere is a version for Mac or Windows depending on your platform, and in the How to section on that page there are instructions you may follow. If you need any help, please feel free to contact us :a href= http://support.g-technology.com/contact/contact_support target= _blank http://support.g-technology.com/contact/contact_support/a

Q: 9. I want to setup a daisy chain as an additional backup. If my first 2 bay array is in raid 1, what should my second 2 bay array be setup as? I'm looking for a triple redundancy.

A: Daisy chaining just allows you to mount more drives on your system through a single port. The devices to do not combine with each other. It will just appear as another drive on your system. You would most likely want Raid 1 again, but you'd need to copy any files from one drive to the other manually or using some backup software.

Q: 10. does hdmi support 10bit 2560*1440 display?

A: Yes
