I have been using Nikon cameras since 1988. I've owned all levels of models, from professional to consumer, DLSR/film SLR to point-and-shoot and action. I work full-time as a photographer.


I was saving for the Z7 to replace my D810, and then came to the decision that the cost for the modest increase in resolution was not cost-effective, so instead opted for the Z6 to replace my aging D600.


In short, this is one of the best cameras I've ever used. Having dallied with mirrorless from Sony and Fuji, I thought I knew what was coming, but was very much surprised by the DSLR like feel, the responsiveness, and quality of images.


The single card slot is a non-issue - with WIFI and tethering I never need to remove the card anyway - it's like having permanently installed memory. The batteries from all my other cameras work in the Z6, and with the new battery you can charge in the camera.


The menu system is familiar and somehow easier to use. I've never set up the MyMenu before, but it seemed natural with this camera.


Focus is dead on, the 24-70 f4 is an outstanding lens, and I'll repeat: best camera decision I've ever made. Now I start saving for the eventual D810 replacement when they come out with the 60mp version.

Love the Z6! The color and ISO performance is fantastic! Much better than my D750. Very fast and the focusing and meter are dead on every time! The only thing that I miss is a vertical grip with a shutter release button. I am getting used to not having one. The 24-70 f4 is unreal! I have checked sharpness and CA and I can't say enough about this lens. If all the other Z lenses perform this well, then WOW! I made a 20x30 inch print from this camera with the 24-70 of a group of 200 people and I could see detail in all of the faces! The 12 frames a second it FAST and the Eye autofocus works well! This is a GREAT camera!

Camera: well, this is an amazing camera. I'm using primarily professionally for video, but the photography on it is outstanding and really fun. I have a bunch of vintage Nikon lenses that were handed down to me, which I am using for both photography and video. I'm still developing my skills using it manually, but when I dial it in right it is fantastic. On automatic, the autofocus is not great at low light. You might be happier with a Canon for full auto shooting. Although, I'm not sure if that will change with future firmware upgrades.  

Kit: Pretty useful kit. I think it should include a card reader, because if you're on an old Mac, you'll need a reader. Plus, it downloads about 10x the speed. The camera case is better than nothing, and fine if you're only using what comes in the kit. I added a vintage 200mm and a 35-105 zoom into my kit, and along with the FTZ adaptor, well, this little bag is packed and awkward to use.
UV filter is nice. Can't remember if I got a lens cloth with the kit, but I think some cleaning supplies would be a welcome addition as well.

I upgraded from a D600 wich is a big step up but im still trying to get the reaction time of the camera... so OBVIOUSLY it’s insane all i can say is
1connects to your phone no computer required
2 touch screen
3 low light and video...its peachy

So far this camera has lived up to my expectations. The lighter weight is a much welcomed feature even with the traditional F mount lenses I’m using. I anticipate it being even better when I can afford the Z lenses. I love the fact that the exposure you see in the viewfinder and lcd is what you will be getting. This takes out a lot of the guess work in tricky situations where you have to change settings on the fly. I’m looking forward to doing more shoots with it and also weddings in the upcoming wedding season.

This camera is a joy to use. The images from the Z6 body and the new line up of Z lenses = superfine! I have been shooting with the Fuji X system for years- I think Nikon has done a fantastic job on this new mirrorless system!

Great Camera!!!

My previous experience with a mirrorless camera(A6000) was not that good. So I have stuck with DSLRs for a long time. I have had many Nikon bodies since the 1980s with the current one being the D810. I was in search of a smaller walk-about / travel body. I was considering a Fujifilm X-T3 but when I found out that the Z6 has a lens adapter(FTZ), I knew I had to try it. The Z6 is an amazing piece of gear. While the focus on some of my older tele lenses can be a bit wonky, the image quality is over the top amazing!! I'm shocked by it actually. I feel that moving the image stabilization to the body made a huge difference in sharpness. The handling and feel of the body is a very good fit and comfortable and I truly appreciate the 2nd Function button !!!! As well battery life is excellent, so I don't see a need for more than two batts unless away from power for 4 days. The one thing that took me a bit by surprise is; the XQD card/slot. Turns out this format will be phased out over time and replaced with CF Express cards. From what I understand is that there will be a firmware update to address this. A person will be able to use both formats in the Z6 and Z7. I plan on buying several XQD cards when CF Express hits the market. Below is an image from the first round of photos I took with the Z6 plus FTZ plus my 70-200 f2.8 VR ED lens. It will take me a little while to get used to the controls and functions of this camera as compared to the D810, but it is a keeper. In the future I will start investing in the Z mount lenses, but until then I'm happy using my legacy F mount lenses.

I upgraded from a D7000, and am very pleased. The resolution step-up was more than sufficient for me. My D7000 batteries work in it, so with the 2 that I bought, I have more than enough.
I took it on a 2-week Grand Canyon trip. I used up 2 of the ENEL15A's from the D7000, and half of one of the new ones. I took around 240 photos and a couple of video segments.
My observations:
- Great dynamic range
- Whites will clip if the internal meter is more than halfway up the scale
- I have not seen any banding in my photos
- Live histogram in the viewfinder is awesome
- Locking mode dial is a big help c/w the D7000
- Idiosyncratic viewscreen activation, I switched to manual
- extendable viewscreen is a huge plus
- Playing with all of these features and the touchscreen consumes more battery than you might expect based just on # shots
- I did not try to charge it though I had a solar panel, a folding 7-watt type. It could just charge a 6000 mAh GoalZero. I couldn't charge all of the time because of raft conditions and angles / shadows. I think that the ENEL15b is probably around 6000-8000 mAh from what I have read. If wanted to seriously charge these batteries in the field, I would consider a 20 Watt or higher panel, charge a battery pack, and then transfer the charge to the camera at night.

This is a great camera if you are ready to make the transition to mirrorless and already have Nikon glass. The package assembled by BH adds a XQD card and UV filter for additionally no additional price (along with the lens and FTZ make for a great package). Only disappointing thing is the bag they include can barely fit the camera let along any extras - should have included next-size up bag - but even with bag being a throw-away still a great package.
