Offering a 10-stop reduction in exposure, along with infrared attenuating abilities, this 72mm Tiffen XLE Series advantiX IRND Filter enables the use of longer exposure times with maintained color fidelity. By darkening the entire scene, this 3.0 optical density filter allows you to work with wider apertures or longer shutter speeds without overexposing your image, in order to better control depth of field or convey movement more easily.

The IRND design of this filter has been optimized for use with digital sensors, and works to attenuate both visible and infrared light. Digital image sensors are more sensitive to a greater range of light spectra, and as such are prone to color shifts or casts when photographing darker subjects or scenes that require increased exposure times. This filter's unique design helps to suppress false colors for greater neutrality and faithful color reproduction.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, and mounting to precision metal rings.

ND 3.0 filter darkens the image, allowing you to photograph with a longer shutter speed or wider aperture than normally required.

Providing a 10-stop exposure reduction, this filter allows you to control depth of field and convey movement more easily.

Attenuates infrared light, as well as visible wavelengths, to maintain color neutrality and suppress color casts due to increased exposure lengths.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. is there a particular reason Nisi makes this density in 100x100mm and not 4x4? I need 8 stop ND to complement my Nisi IRND set

A: You can use 100x100 filters. 100x100 is the same as a 4x4 filter.

Q: 2. I bought three of these (2/4/6 stops) and only this 2 stop 4x4 doesn't fit into SmallRig Lightweight Matte Box. If all of them didn't fit I'd easily blame it on SmallRig as it's a super low level item, but apparently QC from Nisi is subpar?

A: NiSi have provided an exchange option for this inquiry.

Q: 3. How thick are these filters? I'm looking for one 4mm thick to fit my mattebox tray.

A: Yes, these filters are 4mm thick.

Q: 4. I have a mirrorless camera that I had converted for IR photography; regular ND filter do not have any effects on exposure; I want to shoot IR with long exposure, will this NiSi IRND do the job?

A: No, the NiSi 82mm PRO Nano IRND 3.0 Filter (10-Stop) would not be compatible for your usage needs. It does the opposite of what you are looking for; it is designed to block IR to the extent that there will not be infrared pollution when taking a long exposure. As an alternative, the filters in the NiSi Swift FS ND Filter Kit (82mm), B&H # NIRFSNDSWK82, are designed to pass all wavelengths of light evenly, so this would also be an alternative for your usage needs. Also, as standard neutral density filters pass along infrared light unless it specifically indicates it has IR reduction, a filter such as the Hoya ProND EX 1000 Filter (82mm, 10-Stop), B&H # HOPNDEX1T82, should also work for your usage needs. https://bhpho.to/3ieQ30o https://bhpho.to/3LZm8bn

Q: 5. Does this have the scratch resistant coating which was demonstrated at NAB 2016?

A: Scott, these particular NiSi filters do have a scratch resistant coating, BUT, it is not the same as what was demonstrated during NAB 2016. NiSi has a new line of filters with a very strong scratch-resistant coating coming out later this year. That is what was being demonstrated at NAB 2016.

Q: 6. How many stops would I need to do a long exposure of the direct sunset with a bright reflection off a river? I already have a 3, 6, and 10 and I can't get a past 2 second shutter speed with the 10 stop. Should I stack them or buy the 15 or 20 stop?

A: It is always better to use as few filters in front of the lens as possible so one 20 stop filter would be a better choice.

Q: 7. Will this filter work in a Lee Foundations filter holder?

A: Yes it does

Q: 8. Does this filter fit inside Tilta Mini Matte Box 82mm adapter ring?

A: Yes.

Q: 9. does this filter thickness fit into the 4x5.65 filter slots from this mattebox? BH #TIMBT12M114 MFR #MB-T12-M114

A: The Tilta 3-Stage 4 x 5.65" Carbon Fiber Clip-On Matte Box (114mm Back) is a cinema matte box and takes cinema 4mm thick filters. The NiSi 4 x 5.65" Nano IRND 0.3 Filter (1-Stop) is 4mm thick. It will fit.

Q: 10. Can this filter be used for solar eclipse photos?

A: No, the NiSi 77mm PRO Nano IRND 3.0 Filter (10-Stop) would not provide enough coverage for solar eclipse photography. You need at least 16 stop ND, preferably with UV/IR cut. Nisi has the following option. https://bhpho.to/3vaPO0g

I've used 0.3 and 0.9 Tiffen ND filters before for long exposure photography and have had good results with Tiffen. I finally got tired of stacking multiple filters to get the reduction this one 3.0 filter provided. This aXent ND 3.0 performed just fine. There are always drawback to filters with this much light reduction. In the case of this filter, the end image was very warm in natural light. With Photoshop I had to adjust the White Balance temperature to 4350 Blue and the tint -27 towards the Green to make my daylight shot look like a normal 5500/+10 Daylight White Balance. But that was easy, expected, and doesn't affect the picture's quality in any way. I definitely like the results, would recommend it, and would buy this product again. P.S.: Don't forget to cover your eyepiece during long exposures like I did in photo #2!

I just used this filter to photograph a small cascade on a mountain stream. The water came out smooth white while the background was exposed normally. I am going to have a lot of fun with this filter.
