Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Hello, under recommending accessories it is mentioned Seagate 16TB IronWolf Pro 7200 rpm SATA III 3.5" Internal NAS HDD (CMR, OEM) for Synology DS1522+ But on the Synology website under HDD compatibility it is mentioned Exos X16 ST16000NM001G for the 16 TB model. Kindly Confirm. ? Thanks

A: Both of these models will be compatible with the DS1522+. This enclosure can accept most 7200 rpm 3.5" SATA III hard drives, the Seagate IronWolf Pro will be compatible.

Q: 2. Can oui mix HDD and SSD in the same machine, likeby using 3 SSD and 2 HDD? Can we use different different storage capacit for HDD, like 2 16 T and one 12T or they all have to be the same? Thank you

A: It is possible to mix storage types in a Synology NAS, but when doing so it is recommended to use the different types of drive in separate storage pools. A RAID storage volume containing both an HDD and an SSD will only be able to run at the slower speed of the HDD, so the enhanced speed of the SSD would be wasted.

Q: 3. How significant is the performance gain of adding nvme drives for caching? How does the size of the cache impact performance?

A: Cache drives are used to store frequently-accessed files to improve read times. This is done as a compromise between the speed of flash storage and its relative cost when compared to hard drives. For the best intersection of cost and performance, it is usually ideal to have your cache size at about 10% of your storage capacity. Q: 4. can the individual bays be mixed in different configurations? For example, 4 bays configured for raid, the other seperate?

A: Yes, the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ will allow you to have multiple volumes in the same enclosure.

Q: 5. Does latest Synology firmware/software support larger than 18tb drives yet?

A: The Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure does show compatibility with a 20TB Drive, model HAT5310-20T.

Q: 6. Do you feel their would be. a significant performance difference between the 5400/5900rpm drives over IronWolf Pro 7200rpm drives? Noting in 4Q 22' IronWolf Pro is not listed on Synology Compatibility List...

A: The Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure will have an easier time working with 7200 RPM drives when you are sending information to and from the NAS unit over the 5400 or 5900 drives. Since the drives spin faster, the information can copy sooner.

Q: 7. What is the largest Seagate IronWolf Pro drive that Synology accepts for this NAS storage?

A: At the moment, the largest Seagate IronWolf Pro drive Synology lists as compatible with the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure, is the 16TB model, B&H # SEST16000NT1.

Q: 8. What's the largest drive that this unit can handle?

A: Currently the largest hard drive that the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure BH #SYDS1522P • MFR #DS1522+ is 18TB but that is subject to change as larger drives come out and they are tested by Synology.

Q: 9. Is this fast enough to handle video editing from 2-4 machines simultaneously?

A: The DS1522+ NAS enclosure can work for multiple machines to edit video, but it will be slower with larger file sizes. For a little bit more speed, it is worth considering a similar enclosure that has more drive bays, and a quad core processor, like this: https://bhpho.to/3cRGiWG .

Q: 10. Is there a specific surge protector that work with this device? And what size would you recommend Thanks Dominik

A: There are a wide range of options. This could be one option and its also on the manufacturer list of tested UPS. BH #CYCP850PFCV2
