Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What Arca type plate fits the P1000?

A: The Acratech Arca-Type Universal Quick Release Plate will work: https://bhpho.to/2eRPatk

Q: 2. is the zoomed image visible in the viewfinder?

A: Yes.

Q: 3. Will it have GPS like the P900?

A: Nikon does not list GPS as a feature of the P1000. I would suggest as a solution using a smart device app that records your locations to a GPX file that you load into your photo editor which then geotags the photos. This works based on the time they were taken.

Q: 4. What are the accessories included in the box? Can the coolpix P1000 be used for commercial purposes?

A: In the BoxNikon COOLPIX P1000 Digital CameraEN-EL20a Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (7.2V, 1110mAh)EH-73P Charging AC AdapterUC-E21 USB Type-A Male to Type-B Micro Male Cable (Black)AN-DC3 Camera Strap (Black)77mm Snap-On Lens CapHB-CP1 Lens HoodLimited 1-Year Warranty

Q: 5. Why are the specs grayed out? How could anyone preorder until we know what they are? I'm kinda enthusiastic about this camera. It remains to be seen.

A: Check now 7/10 (0945PST), they are not grayed out now

Q: 6. Hellow quick question, can this camera shoot in a night vision mode or infrared for night time sky photography?

A: For night sky photography capturing the Milky Way, you do not need night vision or infrared. In fact, neither would get you the look you are looking for. Ideally, you would use a full frame sensor camera and a quality wide angle prime lens (plus a tripod) to do astrophotography. The P1000 camera will do very well capturing a close up of the moon. However, it would not be a good choice for night time sky photography. That is because the sensor is too small for good and the lens too slow for low light capture. Shooting the night sky means no more than a 30 second exposure otherwise the stars move too much and become not beautiful point of light but ugly blur. You can do that with a full frame camera and fast prime lens and not with the P1000. And finally, to answer your question, there is no night vision or infrared in the P1000.

Q: 7. Touchscreen?

A: no touchscreen on the Nikon P1000

Q: 8. In manual mode does the ISO default to a set number once exposure time is greater than 1 second?

A: We are not sure of the behavior of the P1000 since it is not out yet and we do not have access to enough information at this time. Going off the P900 however, we see that in manual mode, when set to Auto or Fixed range auto, the ISO sensitivity is fixed at ISO 100. This appears to apply to anything regarding exposure time.

Q: 9. Past Nikon Coolpix cameras suffered from bad/slow focus in low light condition. Are there any test on that with P1000?

A: Initial reports say that the AF is good for a super zoom for most instances including sports. Low light and small objects may cause hunting. Once in hand, we all shall see.

Q: 10. How granular are the on-board audio controls? Can AGC be turned off? Is the input smart enough for using external mic sources without interfering with the external gear's audio quality?

A: While this camera has big lens capabilities, its audio should be considered entry level. Since we do not have access to sufficient information, we can only offer the opinion that probably you will be able to turn AGC off. As to the mic input being smart enough, we are of the thought that the pre-amp circuitry is entry level and if you wish discerning audio, we recommend a separate, and quality, audio recorder.

I had the P900 before this and liked it. However, its so-so viewfinder made it hard to take pictures of fast moving objects like planes, birds, and pro athletes. The P1000 has a great viewfinder. It also has RAW. It's bulky, especially at full zoom, but not heavy when compared with DSLR's and big zoom lenses. It is not a camera for action photography at night. You could get some good shots in summer afternoon baseball or football games. I think it would be good for wildlife photography, especially birding. If you expect its image quality to match that of a DSLR and expensive zoom lens, you will probably be disappointed. However, it is a good all around camera for the non-professional who wants to have fun taking pictures in oh so many settings. If this camera is too big for you, consider getting the P950, which costs $200 less and goes out to only 2000mm. If you don't mind a less nice EVF, spend $200 less than that and get a P900.

I'm an amateur photographer but an avid birder and wildlife watcher. I bought the P1000 especially for the 3000mm zoom capability. I've taken a few shots with it and for me, it is the perfect camera. Really looking forward to taking it to Yellowstone next September. If I see a bear or a wolf, I should be able to get a picture of it no matter how far away it is. And yes, you need a tripod for the long zoom. I would highly recommend this camera.

I have been doing photography for over 50 years. I started with a Brownie Hawkeye that I still have. I have used a lot of different cameras including 4 different Nikons. I have used film and digital. I have developed and printed images in my own darkroom. So I have paid my dues.

Nothing prepared me for the P1000. It is quirky and not perfect BUT it does so much that all the quirks are erased for me. I won't bore you with discussion of features. I will just talk about one image that I took with this camera.

I was photographing some birds at our feeder (a wonderful use for the P1000) when i saw a squirrel scurried along a rooftop. He was quite a distance away and I had to zoom out to 2800 mm to get what I wanted which was his head against the washed out cloudy sky. It was a profile. I had no idea what i would do with it but I liked it.

I leaned against the minivan, tucked my elbow into my gut and cradled the extended lens in my hand, checked focus and shot. The image was perfect. Incredible sharpness for a hand held shot at 2800 mm.

Later I took the picture into Luminar 4 and kicked it up by adding a standard sunset sky. I didn't need to do any additional tweaking except a touchup to the ear to prevent it from turning into sky during the replacement (Luminar issue).

I could never have taken what is basically a long range snapshot tweaked up a bit with any other equipment I have. My big 100-600 Tamron G2 with teleconverters would not get out far enough and no way I could have handheld that on my Nikon D7500.

The bottom line is there are a zillion cameras and lenses that do wonderful things. There is no camera and lens that can do what the P1000 does. NONE.

Is it the best at everything? No. Is it a pro grade camera? No. Does it have the best specs? No. Will it enrich and enlighten your photography? YES and in ways you can't even predict.

The camera controls were easy to use without reading the manual. The images were very good even at the extreme focal length. For best results, however, this is a tripod camera. The bluetooth remote was easy to set up and a life-saver as use of the manual shutter release introduced too many vibrations. Accompanying the order was an extra battery and charger. Typical Nikon quality.

I wish the camera had an exposure delay feature which would be helpful at the extreme focal lengths. And a greater exposure bracketing range would have been nice. The only con issue was the Nikon written manual. I had to resort to a third-party book to explain some of the features in detail. Because of this my rating would actually be 4.5 instead of 5.

Overall I was quite pleased with this purchase.

Nikon P1000 is an amazing camera if you know its limitations. No other camera comes even close to its 24-3000mm (equivalent) zoom range and the Nikkor lens is pretty sharp. Now to the main point: the image quality of pictures taken at 100 to 400 ISO are as good as pictures taken with a cropped or even full frame camera having the same number of pixels. One can verify it here: https://www.imaging-resource.com/IMCOMP/COMPS01.HTM

This was actually for my wife. She wanted a camera that would reach out there. And, well, this one definitely reached out there! At the time of purchase, I believe it has the longest FC of any available built-in-lens camera. It's great for birding, though slightly slower than I would prefer, but does a good job. Excellent sharpness for such a range and actually has a descent wide angle for as long as it reaches. The internal stabilization is good to have. At the longer FC's, a tripod is better, but I hand held it with respectable results.

IF YOU ARE WANTING A PACK CAMERA, this may be an issue. the P1000 is a BEAST! The thing is huge. Now, I knew this going in, so no surprises here, but know that it is a very big camera. It has to be in order to do what it does.

As an advanced hobbyist who uses a Nikon D500 and Z6, I wanted something to capture close ups of wildlife further away than any DSLR could reach. In good daylight this camera will produce acceptable shots to be viewed on computer screens, phone screens, etc. There are professional lenses that cost much more then this camera but for the price it's a fun addition if you want to get shots that you could not otherwise get.
