Provided in a white packaging box, the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II from Canon is a standard zoom offering a 28.8-88mm equivalent focal length range. One aspherical element is featured in the lens design and helps to control spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for consistent sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to individual elements to control flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy in all lighting conditions. Complementing the imaging capabilities is a four-stop-effective Image Stabilizer system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper handheld shooting. Additionally, a Micro Motor autofocus system delivers quick focusing performance, and a minimum focusing distance of 9.8" is available at all focal lengths for close-up shooting.

Compact standard zoom is designed for APS-C-format Canon EF-S-mount DSLRs and offers a 28.8-88mm equivalent focal length range.

One aspherical element is used to reduce distortion and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range in order to maintain sharpness and clarity.

Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.

An Optical Image Stabilizer helps to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to four shutter speed stops to better enable working in low-light conditions and with slower shutter speeds.

A Micro Motor autofocus system provides quick focusing performance and a dedicated AF/MF switch allows for quick switching between auto and manual focusing methods.

Minimum focusing distance of 9.8" is available throughout the zoom range for working with close-up subjects.

Rounded six-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

Q: 10. Is this is the lens that typically comes with the camera? I believe mine has worn out and need to replace it. Have had since 2011. Is there a newer version I should consider.

A: The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Lens, B&H # CA1855EFS, is the standard kit lens that was available on Canon EOS DSLR cameras in 2011. The most current version of this lens is the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM Lens, B&H # CA185545STM, which was released in 2017. I would state that if your camera was purchased before 2013, the lens you currently own should be fine for your usage needs. If your camera was purchased after 2013, or if you are planning on purchasing a new Canon EOS APS-C DSLR camera, then I would recommend the newer lens. The newer lens has the updated STM Stepping Motor inside the lens, which is designed to provide smoother and more silent focusing when using the Movie AF autofocusing mode for video recording needs. As cameras before 2013 do not have Movie AF capability, while the newer lens is still compatible for use on older cameras, it is not necessary and you would not get the improved benefit from the STM stepping motor.

My normal setup is a 60E with a telephoto zoom, and is almost useless in most interior shots. This little lense works as a perfect complement with its zoom from wide to standard, it's small enough to haul around, and its lense size being able to share accesories/filters with my telephoto lenses. The wide angle zoom gives me a wider flexability and more useable field of view in tight quarter situations that alows me to enhance the central subject. It is a joy to just be able to shoot/compose without thinking.

This is a great wide angle / walk around lens. I like this better than my 10-20mm Canon wide angle. I get so much more use from the 18-55 because of its versitility.

Lightweight, easy to attach in a hurry. I wish it had a string to attach lens cover to lens. Sharp focus.

I think this is a great basic lens for those who are experienced photographers but don't want to drag a big camera bag with multiple lens everywhere. Good lens if you want a camera & lens combo to be useful in many situations.
