The media engine in the M2 Ultra can handle up to 22 streams of 8K ProRes video. The 4TB SSD allows for fast boot and load times.
Upgrade the Mac Pro with ease, thanks to its six PCIe Gen 4.0 slots. There are two PCIe Gen 4.0 x16 slots and four PCIe Gen 4.0 x8 slots. There is also a half-length PCIe Gen 3.0 x4 slot that is occupied by the Apple I/O card. Speaking of I/O, the Mac Pro features eight Thunderbolt 4 ports, all with 40 Gb/s data throughput and DisplayPort support. Connect to the internet via the dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN jacks or go wireless with Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax). Bluetooth 5.3 allows you to connect compatible devices wirelessly.
The Mac Pro comes with the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad and the Magic Mouse. All you need is a display to get started. You also don't have to stop at one screen since the Mac Pro can support up to eight 4K 60 Hz displays, six 6K 60 Hz displays, or three 8K 60 Hz displays.
This Mac comes preloaded with macOS. Updates can be downloaded for free via the Mac App Store. Please check Apple's website for upgrade eligibility.

The M2 Ultra is built from two M2 Max dies connected through UltraFusion, which is Apple's custom-built packaging technology. UltraFusion uses a silicon interposer that connects the dies with more than 10,000 signals, providing over 2.5 TB/s of low latency interprocessor bandwidth. UltraFusion's architecture enables the M2 Ultra to appear as a single chip to software. This means code doesn't need to be rewritten to utilize the extreme performance of the M2 Ultra.
The 24-Core CPU of the M2 Ultra consists of 16 next-gen performance cores and eight next-gen high-efficiency cores, delivering up to 20% faster performance than its predecessor, the M1 Ultra. Combined with a 76-core GPU and 64GB of unified RAM with 800 GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, this Mac Pro has the performance of not just one, but seven Afterburner cards built-in. It also features the industry-leading media engine, allowing playback of up to 22 streams of 8K ProRes video.
Combine Apple silicon performance with the versatility of PCI expansion. The Mac Pro features six PCIe Gen 4.0 slots, which provide twice the bandwidth for audio and video I/O, networking, and storage cards. There are two double-height PCIe Gen 4.0 x16 slots, two single-height PCIe 4.0 x8 slots, and two double-height PCIe 4.0 x 8 slots. There is also a half-length PCIe 3.0 x4 slot that is occupied by the Apple I/O card.
The Mac Pro offers a wide array of connectivity, starting with eight Thunderbolt 4 ports, which support up to 40 Gb/s data transfer rates and DisplayPort. There are also two HDMI ports that support high-bandwidth 48 Gb/s HDMI, enabling resolutions up to 8K and refresh rates up to 240 Hz. The two USB-A ports can handle legacy USB devices while the 3.5 mm audio jack provides headphone support. There are also wireless connectivity enhancements, such as Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.3. You can also opt for a reliable, wired connection via the dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN jacks.
The Mac Pro maintains its unique stainless steel space frame, removable aluminum housing, and advanced thermal system. The chassis is solid and stable. And thanks to the power efficiency of Apple silicon, the Mac Pro runs even cooler and quieter under heavy workloads.
Thousands of pro apps are optimized for Apple silicon. Because macOS was designed to scale with Apple silicon, the M2 Ultra brings a huge boost in app performance and capability to the Mac Pro. And there are thousands of apps optimized to unlock the full power of Apple silicon. From rendering effects to compositing 8K scenes to analyzing enormous data sets, your go-to apps run faster and smoother than ever.

The Mac Pro was designed with the environment in mind, including 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets, and 100 percent recycled gold plating and tin soldering in multiple printed circuit boards. The Mac Pro also uses far less energy than desktop computers in the same class, and over 40 percent less than the ENERGY STAR efficiency requirement. The Mac Pro is free of mercury, PVC, beryllium, and over 95 percent of the packaging is fiber based.
Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Still wondering if I should get the base imac pro or a regular imac with the same 32 ram and same 1T ssd drive for less $. I will be proccessing images from a Sony A7R lll. Some of them could be 100 to 500 mb once processed. Especially large will be the panoramas. Any opiniond out there?
A: I would go with the pro, and I did
Q: 2. Can you order the magic trackpad instead of the magic mouse?
A: We do not offer the option to swap the mouse or keyboard.
Q: 3. Are there known issues with the iMac Pro and the Logitech MX Master mouse?
A: No issues reported on our end.
Q: 4. Which iMac would be best suited for a professional photographer who does large format printing using large file sizes and also has a graphics processor that will support 10 bit in Photoshop using an Eizo monitor?
A: Something like this would be best answered by talking to one of our Apple professionals. Please email us at apple@bhphoto.com, or call us at 800.606.6969 / 212.444.6615 during normal business hours.
Q: 5. What do you do with dust accumulation inside the iMac?
A: Hi Ryan, I've owned my iMac Pro for a few months, with no dust accumulation. Cheers, Nick
Q: 6. Has anyone edited with this machine with RED raw footage? Looking to upgrade and find minimum specs required to edit in 4k with 8k raw footage
A: All I do is edit on iMac Pro, both Raw and Pro Res. I have a 3.2 Intel Xeon Processor, 64 GB 2666 MHz DDR4, and the better Vega 64 Graphics Card. One thing I regret is not blowing out the memory. Although the Pro is faster than my 2013, it is definitely not the powerhouse it was cracked up to be. Unless you're doing straightforward cuts you will be waiting for effects to to render, even simple transitions. Overall I'm disappointed with the Pro, the price tag is high for a machine that is not as blazing fast as advertised. It does crash from time to time which I did not expect. When I have time I will contact apple and troubleshoot, there are bugs. Hope that helps.
Q: 7. Any Final Cut users have comparitive experience with the Radeon Vega Pro 64 vs. 56 ? Clearly the 64 would process 4k faster but I'm wondering speed bump is worth the price given that I'm a semi-pro who does 50/50 4k vs.2k. (thanks in advance for replies.)
A: If you take 10min 4k video file and compare 56 vs 64 . The 64 is gonna export the video about 1min faster . So little faster . Keep in mind if you do like 4hr long 4k video, the 64 prob be 10-15 faster .
Q: 8. Is the keyboard with numeric pad?
A: it is a standard apple keyboard with numeric pad (but wireless)
Q: 9. What does AppleCare cost for these iMac Pros?
A: Apple care for the Imac pro will be $169
Q: 10. Are there any Imac pro owners who are editing 4k with gh5?what are the optimum specs for editing GH5 4K?thank you
A: Hey Kenny, I am editing 4k video from my Sony A7Sii with the new iMac Pro on FCPX 4.1. I don't have gh5. I got the maxed-out 16 processor system and I have not had any issues. I have background rendering selected and everything works smoothly. Best of luck!
