Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. How do you shoot vertical with this tripod? Can you adjust the plate for vertical shots?

A: Simple loosen the ball and set the camera in the vertical position.

Q: 2. What does the AS mean? How is this different from Manfrotto’s Befree Advanced 4-Section Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod w494 head?

A: The (AS) in the Manfrotto Befree Advanced AS Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with Twist-Lock Quick Release, BH #MAMKBFRTC4FB stands for "Arca Swiss". It is the new travel-ready pro photo tripod, with a simple twist to securing your tripod legs. Mounts any gear with the full Arca-compatible attachment.

Q: 3. Is this tripod able to accommodate the weight of a Canon R6, Battery Grip, and a 400 2.8 RF Lens?

A: The Manfrotto Befree Advanced Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with 494 Ball Head would not be recommended for use with a long lens like a 400mm f2.8. A stronger tripod such as this Robus would be recommended instead: https://bhpho.to/3eenxYf

Q: 4. In a response to a previous question, it was stated that you can change the top plate on the ball head so that it will work with Arca-swiss. What is that plate and if used, will it weaken the integrity of the tripod and head?

A: The head comes with a quick release plate that will work with Manfrotto and or Arca Swiss on OTHER ball heads. You could however change the ballhead out for an Arca type head or you can change the qr clamp on this head to accept Arca plates.

Q: 5. Will this tripod work with the Really Right Stuff L-Plate Set for Select Sony Alpha a7 Series Cameras?

A: Unfortunately no, the Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Tripod with 494 Ball Head only accepts the RC2 plate.

Q: 6. Can it turns in a monopod?

A: I'm sorry, no, this tripod does not have the ability to turn into a monopod.

Q: 7. What is the height to the top of the ball head with the legs fully extended and the center column all the way down?

A: With the center column all the way down, the Manfrotto Befree Advanced Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod with 494 Ball Head (Twist Locks, Black) is exactly 50 inches/127 centimeters tall.

Q: 8. Can you reverse the center column on this tripod? How hard is that to do?

A: Yes the column can be reversed as per the user manual.

Q: 9. Are tripods universal for all cameras? I use a Nikon D7000. Would it work with this tripod?

A: The 1/4"-20 screws would be universal for all cameras, yes. However, stability and weight capacity would ultimately depend on your camera + lens combination.

Q: 10. Can it hold canon r3+rf600 f4+mvh502?

A: The Befree can hold the Canon R3, 600mm RF and the MVH502 video head.

I've been looking for an affordable carbon fiber tripod for years. My 50 year old unit (was my Moms') work great but it's HEAVY. This unit is stable, will hold about 20 lbs which is great for my long glass. Works great for in-the-field macro shots. This is my first ball head so Im getting used to it. It allows for some quick adjustments to almost any angle. Yes I would buy this again.

Very well built, they def could have went the extra mile and cut out the plastic on the head, but for travel, it's more or less perfect. However, very light. You definitely need to weigh it down for any type of longshots.

money well spent on this small but sturdy, super lightweight, compact tripod. someone put a lot of thought into the wants and needs of the field/ nature photographer. you will make those long trecks more enjoyable without that heavy, bulky old thing you have now. A smith.

I have used this tripod only a couple of time but so far I am happy with the purchase. This tripod is very light (that was the main reason for getting the carbon fiber version) and solid built. I used it with 5DM4 and EF100-400 on it without any problem. I do like all these Manfrottos security and fool proof features implemented (they slows down operating a bit at the beginning, but once you get used to it, you will love it).

Find myself carrying this on photo walks without even thinking about. Fits great across shoulders. Mechanically it is excellent. Only oops on my part was by seeing the arca in the description, I thought my arca l-bracket would also mount on the head. Not the case. The camera mount plate that is provided will attach to either the manfrotto ball head or an arca head. I ended up removing the mounting plate from the head and putting my arca mounting plate on the ball head. Works great.

All the quality you expect from Manfrotto.I can't wait for my upcoming trip to Cognac. Now I'll have room in my suitcase for clothing with this huge weight saving. I'm rapidly becoming a fan of ball heads, and the carrying case will protect the tripod and clothing in the suitcase.
