Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I have a question about how the hdmi record trigger interacts with pre-roll recording. If the recording begins with the timecode running would that mean that consecutive tracks would have overlapping timecodes based on the length of the pre-roll?

A: Not really as you won't be going over anything. When done you save everything as a file. If you wanted to redo something you would create a new file and then edit the files in Post.

Q: 2. The output is 3.5mm unbalanced stereo, can you recommend an in line preamp to XLR for sending the mix to camera?

A: You can use a 3.5mm TRS male to XLR male cable like the Kopul Stereo Right-Angle 1/8" Male Mini-Jack to XLR Male Cable - 3' (B&H # KORSMXM03) in any length to send the audio directly from the 3.5mm line output on the Sound Devices MixPre-3 II Multitrack Field Recorder to a camera's XLR input. Just be sure to set the input level on the camera for "line" in order to have compatible signal levels. A preamp should not be necessary.

Q: 3. Does this unit respond to HDMI record triggers and HDMI timecode from Sony Z90 and NX80?

A: Yes, the recorder features a 1 x HDMI Type-D SMPTE Timecode Input.

Q: 4. can i add a 3.5mm jack microphone?

A: An adapter would be required. Kopul A-XMMF 3.5mm TRS Female to XLR Male Adapter B&H # KOAXMMF: https://bhpho.to/3DC1cAN The Kopul A-XMMF is an adapter that lets you connect a mic equipped with a 3.5mm TRS connector to the XLR input of a professional camera, recorder, or mixing console. The VXLR is terminated by a 3.5mm female TRS connector at one end and an XLR male connector at the other.

Q: 5. Does anyone know if this unit responds to HDMI start and stop triggers from A Nikon Z6?

A: I have the Nikon Z6 and the MixPre-3 II and updated to the latest firmware on both. I set the Z6 to output timecode through HDMI, set the MixPre to receive HDMI timecode input, and connected the HDMI cable from the Z6 to the MixPre-3 II. The MixPre-3 failed to receive timecodes from the Z6. I also set the MixPre to trigger recording (by setting "HDMI Flag" in the record menu). However, it failed to trigger MixPre recording when I started recording on the Z6. Unfortunately, the MixPre-3 II cannot accept HDMI timecodes or triggers as of this date.

Q: 6. Can this be used as an iOS audio interface?

A: While they may be in the future, they are not yet iOS certified.

Q: 7. I'm currently using a preamp (CL-1) on my old field recorder with a dynamic mic. Will I still need the preamp with the Mix-Pre-3 II?

A: Hello William. The CL-1 is a remote control and keyboard interface for the 7-series. Perhaps you mean an MM-1 or MP-1? The MixPre-3 II has built-in mic preamps, so you should not require an external preamp.

Q: 8. How long would this last on a 20,000 mAh battery via USB-C? Or, how big of a mAh battery needed to power it all day?

A: Sound Devices has not published a benchmark for battery life with USB-C power banks, as this figure would be highly situational, but 20,000 mAh is the recommended capacity to use with the MixPre-3 II for better battery life than the included AA battery sled.

Q: 9. Can I connect this recorder directly to my GH5 so that when I am recording video the MixPre-3 is automatically recording sound? In other words, so that I don't have to remember to start and stop the MixPre separately from pressing record on my camera?

A: The MixPre-3 II uses record triggers via HDMI and/or timecode to automatically stop and start recording when the camera to which it is connected starts/stops recording. The MixPre-3 II should accept a record trigger from a GH5, but I would suggest testing this to confirm, as both camera and MixPre-3 II firmware changes over time can cause compatibility issues of which we may be unaware.

Q: 10. I know the unit requires 7.5 watts and 1.5 amps to power it, but what is the max voltage that the USB-C can handle? I would like to connect a LPN battery directly to the USB without having to buy the $60 battery sled.

A: Hello Michael. Generally, if you connect a battery to a device via USB-C, the battery and the device to which it is connected will negotiate the maximum voltage. The MixPre-3 II only uses 5-volts via USB-C. It will not negotiate to the higher available voltages.
