I just got the Adobe Photographer bundle (Lightroom + Photoshop CC 2015) and LR opens NEF files just fine, sends them to PS for editing, and back to LR, all with no issues. I didn't have to convert anything. Of course, PS generates TIF files when you do destructive editing, but keeps the original NEF unharmed. I also see thumbnails of NEFs while browsing my file system (Win7) and the files are registered as PS files (so PS is handling the thumbnails).
