A: When shooting in either the Program P, Shutter-Priority S, Aperture-Priority A, Manual M, or Auto (flash off) Mode (symbol of a lightning bolt in a circle with a diagonal line through it on the Mode dial), the flash will not fire unless you press the flash button on the side of the camera to raise and use the flash. In the full Auto (green) mode, or the SCENE mode, the flash will fire when the camera's internal light meter deems the light level requires flash for a proper exposure. If you do not want the flash to fire, simply use the P, S, A, M, or Auto (flash off) mode on the Mode dial.
