The Pentax smc P-D FA Macro 50mm f/2.8 is designed to be extremely compact and lightweight, compared to conventional macro lenses. The drastic downsizing and weight reduction were achieved through the development of compact, high-performance optical elements and the incorporation of durable yet lightweight exterior components.

This lightweight macro lens features an image circle to accommodate up to 35mm format and offers close-up to 1:1 life-size magnification.

The smc P "D" lens series is designed to optimize image quality in both digital SLR and film photography. Improvements include optimized lens coating along with curvature and positioning of optical elements. In particular, flare and ghost images - the most disturbing factors in digital SLR photography - have been reduced to minimum for clear, high-quality digital images.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If used on another camera via an adapter, will it still have full manual control?

A: It depends on the adapter. Ask the adapter Co.

Q: 2. I am confused. If a full frame sensor is smaller than 645, shouldn't the effective focal length increase instead of decrease?

A: Typically, angle-of-view and focal length are described relative to full-frame 35mm as it is more widespread in use. Crop factors would be then be 1x for 35mm, 1.5x for APS-C, and 0.6~0.8 (rough estimate) for medium format sensors. Since this lens is still technically (from physical distance measured stand-point) 400mm from the sensor, it's a 400mm lens. However, its angle-of-view would be equivalent to a 315mm on a full-frame.

Q: 3. I read that the 35mm equivalent is like 35.6mm focus lens. Is this for a full 645 format, or the reduced 33x44 format of the 645D?

A: The Pentax smc FA 45mm f/2.8 lens has a 35mm focal equivalent length of 35.5mm. This lens is for full 645 format.

Q: 4. Can you use this in the Pentax 645n?

A: Not without an adapter if they make one.

Q: 5. Does this lens offer total manual control?

A: Yes this lens offers manual control.

Q: 6. can it be used with the 645Z body?

A: Yes, this lens will work on the 645z body

Q: 7. Has anyone compared this to the older manual focus 120mm f/4 A lens? I have it and it gives focus confirmation beep, I can't imagine it being much shaper but I don't use it for portraits because I don't want the delay of finding focus using live view and zooming in...

A: The Pentax smc FA 645 120mm f/4 Macro Lens is improved from the older version, because it has better muticoating on the lens, giving the photographer fewer hazy images with improved contrast and sharpness.

Q: 8. I spoke with a sales associate with B & H before buying this Macro 50mm lens for my K-7 and was assured it would work. Current lens is a 50 - 200 mm zoom which works great, just not as a general purpose lens. I removed the current lens and attached the new lens. I cannot go to live view, the lens is not communicating with the K-7, nothing works with the camera. Did I miss something about using this lens or do I have a defective product? So far, I am very disappointed with my purchase.

A: If the lens works on the K5, the lens is fine. The lens may not be fully compatible with the K7.

Q: 9. Will this fit on my Pentax K20d?

A: Yes, the Pentax Normal smc P-D FA 50mm f/2.8 Macro Autofocus Lens is fully compatible with the Pentax K20D.

Q: 10. Can you please tell me if the fine focus adjustment apply one setting works for this lens, without having to use the 'apply all' setting? it would be not so convenient to have to remember to zero the setting every time I change the lens. Thank you.

A: You will want to contact the manufacturer directly for assistance with this inquiry.
