The teak wood 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera from Lensless features a 9" focal length. Lensless Cameras are constructed of different woods. Each model has a tiny hole (1/64" or smaller) precisely drilled in the front panel. The shutter is simply a small hinged metal plate that the photographer swings up and down to begin and end the exposure. The focal length is determined by the length of the camera. The format is determined by the size of the back of the camera, which accepts the film holder. Since it is designed to accept a sheet film holder, there is no need to load the camera in the dark.

This is a teak wood, 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera, with a focal length of 225mm, which is a telephoto perspective for this format. Average exposure in bright, noon-day sun is 4 seconds, using 400 ISO film.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. From what material is the pinhole made?Is the pinhole drilled in wood, metal, or plastic? Is the pinhole drilled by laser or machine drill? Is there a measure of how round the pinhole is?Thanks!

A: I believe it is a laser drilled hole. It is in metal, and the images are super sharp. My camera is about f225 if you want to know.

Q: 2. What is the closest focus distance for macro photography?

A: The focus distance is not specified but it has an f/420 aperture. With such as small aperture, nearly every non moving subject will be in focus.

Q: 3. From what material is the pinhole made?Is the pinhole drilled in wood or metal or plastic? How much precision is there to the pinhole? Is it drilled by laser?

A: Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not share their manufacturing process with us regarding this item. However, the pinhole is quite precise based on the positive reviews.

Q: 4. Which Polaroid back is used for this?

A: You can use the polaroid 545i, 405 or Fuji quickload holder, none of which are made any longer. You will have to source them from our used department or possibly Ebay.

Q: 5. What is the pinhole diameter?

A: The pinhole is 1/64" for the Lensless 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera (Baltic Birch).

Q: 6. does this have any kind of hole so you can attach it to a tripod?

A: Yes, the Santa Barbara 4x5 pinhole camera has 2 threaded 1/4"-20 mounting points for either portrait or landscape shots.

Q: 7. Would this pinhole camera accommodate the LomoGraflok 45 Instant Back?

A: The Lensless 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera (Baltic Birch) is not designed to accommodate an instant film back, which may be too thick to fit--the length and height is compatible, however, so you may be able to fix the camera to fit the instant film back in some way.

Q: 8. required accessories?

A: It needs a fairly sturdy tripod, and you will need some 4x5 film holders as you would any 4x5 camera. You don't need a Black Cat Exposure Guide, but I find mine handy in the field, and easy to use. The only other requirement is lots of patience!!!Hope this helps! Buy one and have tons O' fun!!!Mark

Q: 9. Hey do you know how wide is slide holder slot? i want to see if it will fit a regular graflok back sliding roll film holder(like Cambo C-243 - 6x12)

A: No, the following unit will only accommodate the two following film holders CatLABS 4x5" Film Holder Toyo-View 4x5 Sheet Film Holders

Q: 10. What's the closest it will focus for the advertised 'macro' use?

A: Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not list a minimum focus distance for the Lensless 4 x 5" Pinhole Camera (Baltic Birch). According to the manufacturer, a unique feature of pinhole cameras is that depth of field is of no concern sample photos; everything in front of the camera is equally in focus.

Looks well made and fits 4x5 holders well. There are two round wooden rods included to hold your film holder firm in place. There is also a sheet with suggested exposure times included, which is very helpful.

This thing is a work of art. The time and attention to detail that went into it makes it more than worth the cost and wait. The teak wood is stunning and should out last me by years.

Was considering this over another major brand and I'm glad I chose this one. You will need to have 4x5 sheet film holders to use this camera. Yes that requires that you spend a bit more money but the convenience of loading a few holders keeps you from having to break out the changing bag after each exposure. The seal between the holders and camera body is light-tight and I can see that the strip padding would be easily replaced if it becomes worn out.An added plus is that there are two 1/4-20 tripod sockets so mounting in landscape or portrait orientation is easily done. I can't speak to the light-tightness of the lens cover as I always keep my dark slide in place just before the exposure but it appears to do the job.If you are looking for a pinhole camera to shoot large format and are not interested in making one of your own then this is the best bet. Great construction and a great conversation piece when you are out shooting as it catches a lot of attention!

I bought this 4x5 pinhole as an inexpensive return to large format photography, having shot the format years ago. You will need 4x5 film and holders to use it effectively. The camera is well made (better than I could have done as a DIY project) and the fit and finish are nice. Although the B&H name for this is Santa Barbara, the Santa Barbara company went away a few years ago. Check out lensless camera website, the new name for this product. The builder is very helpful and even directed me to buy from B&H despite the fact that he sells the cameras directly for more money. There are no electronics, so exposure is basically an educated guess, as is composition since there is no finder or ground glass. You might want to carry a SLR or other camera zoomed to 50mm to get a sense of what the box will see. Have fun.

I have several of these. I love them. You can shoot paper or film.

The workmanship is nice, the design tried and true. Not much vignetting like other pinhole cameras. Excellent cameras for shooting out in SUBZERO weather. I have some very expensive cameras and then I have these - I don't think I could part with any of the three that I own. Images are nice and crisp. Only thing I dislike is they do not come with a maker logo like in the example of the camera. But that is not an issue for build/quality or use.

The level of quality and finish on this camera is impressive. The method of securing the film holder in place is simple yet superior to other pin hole cameras available of the market regardless of price. It securely holds the fim holder or 4x5 Instant film back in place. Best of all it is made in the USA!

I was looking for something different I could take out in the extreme cold of Minnesota winter with out having to worry about. This fits the bill perfectly. Very simple, basic, suprising results. Remember photography is supposed to be fun.The fit and finish of this product are excellent. I recommend a blackcat exposure guide with this product. Also tripod required.(or rock,or bench/picnic table).
