Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. is it compatible w/ the D40?
A: es, this lens is fully compatible with the Nikon D40 camera. The D40 requires AF-S type lenses such as this one in order for them to autofocus.
Q: 2. This lens fit nikon D60?
A: Yes, this lens is compatible with the Nikon D60.
Q: 3. Is this compatible with the Nikon D40x?
A: Yes, the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Autofocus Lens is compatible with the Nikon D40X.
Q: 4. I'm ready to purchase, but would like to know what's the warranty on the lens, and who covers it? Thanks
A: The USA lens would come with Nikon USAs warranty, which would be a 5-year warranty (first year international, remaining four years USA only). The Imported lens would come with a one-year warranty from B&H.
Q: 5. Please recommend me low light lense?
A: If you are looking for a telephoto zoom lens for low-light photography needs, then the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II Lens, B&H # NI7020028, would work for your needs. The Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 Di LD (IF) Macro AF Lens for Nikon AF, B&H # TA7020028MN, is the most economical option that has a constant f/2.8 aperture for low light telephoto zoom needs. If you are simply looking for an inexpensive low-light lens, and it does not have to be a telephoto lens or a zoom lens, then the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Lens, B&H # NI5018GAF, would work for your needs.
Q: 6. If I have never used this large of a lens is it very difficult to learn?
A: I shoot wildlife with this lens and it is tack sharp. That being said, you have to learn and use long lens technique . With any lens of this focal length you need a good heavy tripod to reduce shake. Use a higher shutter speed to help freeze the image and reduce the effect of shake. I will often use a release so that I can frame the photo and then get my hands off of the camera/lens and wait for it to settle down before firing. If the subject is moving this isn't possible so keep that shutter speed up. If you are in high winds try to get beside something so it acts as a wind break for you. The best head for a lens this size is a gimbal type head such as the Wimberly and a Arca Swiss style foot on the lens such as Really Right Stuff. Set up like this it is so perfectly balanced you move it around with one finger and it stays put when you stop moving it. To get this to where the critters are I use a Lowepro backpack designed for up to the 600/4 and a body. Tripod on the side of the bag and a large rear pocket for flash, remote cord, and bracket to put the flash over the lens attached to the gimbal mount not the camera. That way you can rotate from vertical to horizontal and back with out moving the flash.Turn the power on the flash down and use it to just barely kiss the subject and bring out color and detail. I use flash mainly on birds or small animals. I shoot with the D810 but if I need more reach I can mount my D300 as it is a dx sensor with a 1.5x crop factor and I get an effective 900mm with it and still maintain the f4 wide open.
Q: 7. Are there any teleconverters that work with this lens?
A: I don't know. I am just using the lens.
Q: 8. I own the Nikkor 55mm-300mm kit lens, I want to up grade to the 70mm-300mm, Is this lens compatable with the D-5100 ?
A: I am sure it is. This is a full frame lens however, with a D-5100 your range will be 105-450.
Q: 9. dose this work with the nikon d7100?
A: yes it works really well
Q: 10. Has anyone had any problem getting such a large lens through customs into a foreign country? Any thoughts about going through differently that regular hand held luggage?
A: You should not have issues going through Customs with a large lens, though if you are concerned I suggest contacting the local office of where you are traveling to confirm. It is not advised to store lenses in checked baggage, and you should only travel with camera equipment in a secure storage setting like a carry on bag.
