Create and perform electronic music with the white Arturia BeatStep Pro , an analog and MIDI controller / sequencer for software instruments, analog and digital hardware synthesizers, drum machines, drum kits, and iPad applications. The unit features 16 projects, each with two melodic sequencers offering up to 64 steps per sequence, and 16 sequences per project. Additionally, the drum sequencer allows for 16 separate tracks of sequencing and allows for real-time recording via pads or step buttons for a classic drum machine workflow.

Use controller mode to control drum software on an iPad (with camera connector kit) or a computer such as BFD, Kontakt, Ableton Live's Drum Rack, EZ Drummer, Addictive Drums, Reason Kong, or Geist. The controller can also be used to trigger clips or tracks in production and DJ software such as Ableton Live, Traktor, and Serato. The rotary encoders can be MIDI mapped to control filters, EQs, delays, and other effects.

When placed into sequencer mode, each of the melodic sequences offer note, velocity, and gate time settings with the ability to tie notes. Record note pitch, length, and velocity in real-time with the pads or an external keyboard and the sequence will playback quantized at the step resolution. The unit includes scale modes to quantize the pitch of the encoders to specific pitches within a given scale. Not only does the drum sequencer record 16 MIDI tracks, but will also sends 8 gate outputs for triggering drum modules in the analog domain.

The BeatStep Pro offers multiple synchronization sources, including internal clock, USB, external MIDI clock, or analog/DIN sync. The USB port allows for standard class-compliant bus-powered operation. Use a USB power adapter to use the BeatStep Pro in standalone mode. The BeatStep Pro ships with a micro-USB cable and three 3.5mm to 5-pin DIN adapters.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does it include the wooden feet as shown in the pics? Thanks in advance

A: No, the wooden legs are not included. This is a brand new item which has not yet been shipped to dealers. At this time Arturia only lists that availability and pricing are to be determined for the wooden legs. More information should be available after the keyboard is in stock so please do check back with us.

Q: 2. does this interface work with the rode nt1 without a separate preamp? can i use this interface with beyerdynamic DT 990 pro 250 ohm version?

A: Yes, the Arturia MiniFuse 2 Portable 2x2 USB Type-C Audio/MIDI Interface can be used with the Rode NT1 Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone. The interface has built-in mic preamps and the ability to supply phantom power to the microphone. The 250 ohm Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro Headphones do work with the MiniFuse 2 at an acceptable volume level, but if you find that you need more power for higher output levels and more headroom, then you will want to use a separate headphone amp.

Q: 3. hi what are the dimensions of this key lab thanks?

A: The Arturia KeyLab MKII 49 measures 31.2 x 11.7 x 2.1" (793 x 297 x 53 mm).

Q: 4. Does it come with the legs pictured?

A: The wooden legs pictured in the product images of the Arturia PolyBrute Analog Morphing Matrix Synthesizer are not included with purchase of the synthesizer. These legs are a separately available item (BH #AR230641WL) found here: https://bhpho.to/3nHpQKL

Q: 5. Does this have waterfall keys?

A: No, the keys on the Arturia KeyLab 88 MkII Hammer-Action MIDI Controller have a very small lip at the end. They are not waterfall style keys with a totally flat edge.

Q: 6. Will this control Cakewalk Sonar or Artist DAWs?

A: Yes, that is possible, there is no template available, so you will have to assign each function from the DAW software and save the settings as a template.

Q: 7. It looks like this doesn't come with a power supply. If that is correct, is there an approved one for this unit?

A: The KeyStep offers two options for powering. The USB port can connect to a computer for both power and data. The USB cable can also be used with a wall plug (the type that you would use to charge a phone), such as the Xuma 2.4A USB Charger with Folding Prongs (B&H # XUCAC124). The other option for powering is to use a standard 9V DC 500mA center positive (5.5 X 2.1 X 12mm) power adapter, such as the BOSS PSA-120S AC Adapter (B&H # BOPSA120S2). Here is a link for the product manual -- see page 15 for info regarding the power options. http://downloads.arturia.net/products/keystep/manual/KeyStep_Manual_1_0_0_EN.pdf

Q: 8. Can I integrate this in home studio based on a Mac Mini m2(2023 NOT Pro), which I intend to use with Apollo solo thunderbolt?

A: Yes, the M-Audio Oxygen Pro 25-Key USB MIDI Keyboard Controller is compatible with the operating system on a Mac Mini M2 model.

Q: 9. Can it control 2 midi synths at a time, each with distinct, but synced patterns? If so, what to know when setting this up? THanks!

A: Yes. You can control up to three devices with the Beatstep. Here is a forum post from Arturia on how to do it. https://forum.arturia.com/index.php?topic=89269.0

Q: 10. can this be used for controlling organ drawbars and other various synth keyboard controlls through a daw?

A: Yes with the ICON Digital i Controls Mini USB MIDI Controller you can control drawbars and other various keyboard EFX and parameters as long as they are in your DAW. You would not be able to control an arranger for example that was not a virtual instrument. As long as it lives in your DAW you will be fine.

Keyboard is shrunken but playable synth-action with velocity and after-touch to work out your music. The 64-step, 8-note sequencer lets you do some complicated things already, not just dance beats. It’s sturdy built and stays put nicely. Knobs and pads are firm to touch.

Actually got the BeatStep first but realized that’s more for DJ’s. Thought I’d miss the knobs but I play with one hand and the other using the mouse works fine to tweak the sound. The sequencer here also excels, worth it alone. Merchandise exchange with B&H no problem, thanks.

Quality product, check it out if it works for you.

I was looking for something smaller than my full size Emu Xboard 61 but bigger than my Keith M illen K-Board and this is definitely it. The keys aren't mini-keys, they're slimkeys with velocity and channel aftertouch that feel more like the excellent feel of the Emu Xboard 61 instead of the rubber drumpad-like keys on the K-board. There's no pitchbend/mod wheel, instead there's two capactive touch strips that are very responsive. I'll use the KeyStep primarily with the USB connection, but it also has mod, gate, pitch and sync outputs (and sync in) if I want to connect to modular analog gear. In addition to the USB MIDI connection there are DIN MIDI in and out and a sustain pedal input that automatically senses the polarity of your sustain pedal. The majorly cool features though, are the polyphonic step sequencer and the arpeggiator. Pretty amazing that this stuff is included at all at this price, and they are by no means an after thought. It wasn't that long ago that just the step sequencer functionality would set you back hundreds of dollars if you bought a separate step sequencer. The KeyStep combines this and versatile I/O along with a great feeling keybed for less than $120.

Great sequencer keyboard, I use it with Ableton and it works like a charm. The built in ARP is super fun and I look forward to exploring more features.

Don't have a lot to compare it to, but sequencer and key action seem about as good as I could ask for as a newb electronic music creator.
