Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. Would not the output of the recorder (line signal) be too strong for a dslr mic input level through a normal trs cable without attenuation ??
A: That is correct, a line level signal is too hot for a mic level input, which is why you would use an attenuation cable. Some DSLR cameras and most professional cameras have a mic/line level selector.
Q: 2. It's possible to connect the recorder with the Original Blackmagic Pocket?
A: Yes, the line output from the Zoom H1n Portable Handy Recorder to the mic input on the original Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera when using a level matching cable like the Sescom LN2MIC-ZOOMH4N - Line to Microphone Attenuation Cable for HDSLR Cameras (B&H # SEL2MZH4N) and the Sescom LN2MIC-ZMH4-MON Line Out to Camera Mic In Headphone Tap Cable (B&H # SEL2MZH4N25D) to convert line.
Q: 3. When you use the HOLD on the Zoom H1n, will it prevent the rotary dial from changing the input level?I have FOUR Zoom H1 recorders and use them to record with lav mics. I plug the lav into the Zoom H1, set the record level, start recording, then use the HOLD function and the recorder gets put into a pocket, etc. I'd hate to have the input level change because the knob gets moved while in someone's pocket. Also, I wish it was USB-C instead of microUSB, but that's not a big issue. The other thing I've really been wishing for in the Zoom H1 recorder is a SAFETY TRACK , so when I'm recording with a lav mic (which is mono), the LEFT channel will record at the level I set, and the RIGHT channel will be a few dB lower; allowing me to rescue anything that may have clipped. Basically asynchronous input levels, since I don't really need stereo for a lav mic.
A: When HOLD is used, the rotary dial is still active and the input level still be changed. Hopefully this potential issue can be addressed and fixed with a firmware update. Firmware updates are constantly being done to improve performance and quirks (based on consumer feedback).
Q: 4. I know the external microphone input. Will it accommodate a stereo microphone? And what kind of connector is it needing? They could be specific rather than just say it's an 8th inch if that's the case. Is it TRS?
A: The Zoom H1n 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Handy Recorder has a single 1/8" (3.5mm) TRS input that will accept microphones and line level audio signal. You can connect a stereo microphone that has the same type of connector to the input on the H1n.
Q: 5. What is the minimum and maximum frequency response for this recorder?
A: Approx. 20Hz to 20kHz.
Q: 6. I have the original H1n which has different buttons design. Are there any other differences (which ones) with current model?
A: Besides button layout and physical appearance, here are the main differences between the Zoom H1 and Zoom H1n: -The H1n now uses two AAA batteries instead of one AA battery. -The H1n comes with the following new features: Onboard limiter, Overdub function, Playback speed controls, auto-record, pre-record, and self-time functions, and Tone generator. -The LCD screen of the H1n has been improved for better readability in direct daylight.
Q: 7. Any suggestions for audio settings for recording an acoustic concert in a venue that seats 400? Planning to set the unit down and forget it for the duration of the show. Just hitting record and letting the device do its thing. Is wav the best option? 48k 24 bit? Lo cut off? Limiter off? Auto level?
A: The gain control for the Zoom H1n 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Onboard X/Y Microphone should always be set based on the situation, so that incoming audio is at an audible level without peaking. The low-cut filter and limiter are situational tools which can be used to remove low frequency content and tame unruly dynamics, respectively. In terms of recording quality, the highest quality the H1n is capable of recording at is 96 KHz/24-bit. These settings can be changed as needed to reduce file size. 44.1 KHz is considered to be CD quality.
Q: 8. Where is this made?
A: The Zoom H1n 2-Input / 2-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Onboard X/Y Microphone is manufactured in China.
Q: 9. Sd card included?
A: no
Q: 10. Does it record every touch when use internal mic? That was a big disadvantage of H1. Is it fixed now?
A: The handling noise is going to be about the same. because the microphones are not shock-mounted.
