Producing a cinematic image quality for still photographers, the Cinestill 50Daylight Xpro C-41 Color Negative Film is re-formatted movie stock that has been prepared and packaged for use in still cameras. Utilizing a unique "Premoval" stage, the traditional anti-halation rem-jet layer has been removed from this film, enabling its development in C-41 chemistry as well as the motion picture standard ECN-2 process.

Benefitting from the distinct qualities of a low-speed motion picture stock, this daylight/5500K-balanced film is well-suited for outdoor shooting in bright conditions and exhibits a nominal sensitivity of ISO 50/18°. If exposing under tungsten/3200K-balanced lighting conditions, an 80B filter is recommended along with exposing the film at ISO 12 for normal results. The slow speed of the film offers extensive control over the highlight regions of a scene, maintains accurate, yet dynamic, colors, and is ideal for portraiture and landscape photography. Its high degree of sharpness and fine grain structure is also particularly well-suited for scanning.

This item is one roll of 36-exposure 35mm (135) film. The cartridge is not DX-coded and the film speed must be set manually.

Low-speed ISO 50/18° daylight-balanced movie stock has been packaged and prepared for use in still cameras.

Unique "Premoval" stage eliminates the rem-jet anti-halation layer to make it suitable for C-41 processing. Processing can also be done with ECN-2 chemistry without worrying about the rem-jet layer.

A distinct halation effect produces glowing highlights from strong light sources.

Emulsion has been optimized for a hybrid workflow and is ideal for scanning.

Specifically designed for use in bright, daylight conditions.

If used under incandescent lighting, an 80B filter and rating the film at ISO 12 is recommended.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Do you have any information on this films reciprocity characteristics when used for long exposures like in astrophotography?

A: Per CineStill: “ We do not currently have a published data sheet regarding reciprocity failure compensation. For very long exposures in very low light some other variables come in to play such as the accuracy of the light measurement. This means that some trial and error may be required. As with all color negative film, it’s usually best to err on the side of giving the film more exposure to create a denser negative with more information for color correcting when scanning or printing in the darkroom.”

Q: 2. I used this film with Nikon FM-10 and Sekonic L-308X-U on a daylight, i sat my light meter to 400 ISO, am following the light meter readings and i still getting under exposed images, what u think is my problem. btw sometimes i push my film but i still not satisfied with the results. (**note** camera is in good condition)

A: As mentioned in the 120 version: I've shot this film twice, once at 800 with no push, and second time at 1600 and pushed 2 stops. The second time around I had better results with contrast and the look I was going for. It's a bit trial and error, but I feel 400 is too low. Try shooting at 500 in daylight if you use with a 85 filter as per CineStill, but honesty I think this is better suited at 800 or 1600 ISO.

Q: 3. This says it's "XPro," is this the same as the 800T sold on CineStill's website? Or is this a different formulation? Is this actual negative film, or is it reversal film that's designed to be cross processed in C-41? Or are they just saying it has a cross processed look to it?

A: It's a newer version of the original stock. It's actual color negative film to be processed with C-41.

Q: 4. Is this DX coded?

A: The CineStill Film 50Daylight Xpro C-41 Color Negative Film is non-DX coded.

Q: 5. hello, I have a canon rebel t2 & 7ne with a automatic film roll. has anyone tested this film with non manual camera's?

A: I am using this film in a Canon EOS Elan 7 and the camera does read the ISO from the cassette. So, you can use this film with your camera. Just remember that it's not a daylight film.

Q: 6. so this is daylight, but you need a filter??????

A: Cinestill 800 is a tungsten light balanced film, it would be roughly equivalent to a digital white balance around say 3000k. It's perfect for indoors under tungsten lighting however you will need an orange filter (81a or similar) if you want to use this film in daylight or other lighting around 5100k (eg- flash, etc).

Q: 7. When is expiration date? Is that film DX coded? As far as I know, only the later version is DX coded.

A: I have a roll I bought in Nov that says 07/2020 hope that helps!

Q: 8. Do you know expiry date of this film?

A: The expiration date will vary with the batches of film.

Q: 9. What is the ISO of this film?

A: The CineStill Film 50Daylight Xpro C-41 Color Negative Film (35mm Roll Film, 36 Exposures) has an ISO of 50.

Q: 10. Might be a dumb question, but this would fit into a holga camera?

A: It should fit. Holga cameras mainly use 120 film.

It’s got a great retro, Kodacolor look when processed. Lots of latitude and detail. Be careful not to load in bright light. The light seal on the cassettes is not perfect and it’s easy to fog the first few frames. It’s my new GoTo color film.

This film really shines in medium format. Highlight retention is excellent even with the halation, which you'll either love or hate. For skin tones I prefer Portra 160, but you can't shoot Portra straight into the sun and expect to retain every last highlight detail. 50D creates very true-to-life colors, even if that's sometimes not desired. Reciprocity failure is nearly identical to Portra 160/400 and it works well as a fine grain night film on a tripod.

There have been several improvements over previous versions of this film. The last roll I shot uses Ilford backing paper with a CineStill 50D stamp on the end, so it has frame numbers on the backing paper for use in manual roll backs or Holgas. The film itself also has CINESTILL50D markings along the edge for easy identification once sleeved. I compared the length to other recent 120 rolls from Kodak and Ilford and it's the same.

The only drawback is the price. As of this writing 50D is 61% more expensive than Portra. Whether it's 61% better is up to you.

This is my favorite roll of color film. Technically doing it in C-41 instead of ECN2 is cross processing it but it still comes out wonderful. I will say though that I really only think it's worth doing when there is sunshine outside. On cloudy days it's sort of wasted. Can handle overexposure pretty well. I think this captures the most accurate skin tones of any film/sensor ever. Not for every single person but some shots I've taken with this just look so authentic in a really unexplainable way. I just came to love it from the first time I shot it.

Thank you Kodak.. This film is super sharp and practically grainless and becomes a form of personal expression. Unlike much of digital imagery these days which becomes one dimensional and frankly boring.
