Q: 1. If one records a scale played on the piano, when the recording is played back at a slowed speed, does the frequency of the notes (pitch) change? Is there a recorder that will playback the music slower (than the original speed, tempo) without changing the frequency (pitch) of these notes?
A: This is not a function of the recorder. You want to look at audio editing software. If you aren't ready to invest (I use Adobe Audition, but the subscription to Adobe Creative Suite is $600/yr), then look at freeware like Audacity, which is pretty great for freeware. I'm 99% sure Audacity can do speed change without pitch change. And Audacity is pretty easy to learn, if you're not too impatient.
Q: 2. Does the H5 compressor/limiter send a live compressed signal to the line output? For example: when connected to a camera, does the H5 compress the line out to prevent a clipped in-camera recording?
A: If the compressor/limiter on the H5 is engaged, your output signal will be compressed. However, clipping in the camera is not determined by this alone. If one connects a line-level output into a mic-level input, distortion in the camera is inevitable. Also, if the input level is set too high on the camera, one runs the risk of clipping as well. If plugging into a mic input, using a cable with built-in attenuation is ideal; B&H # SEL2MZH4N6.
Q: 3. Can I plug into a multbox or other conference room audio systems for clean audio?
A: Yes, the Zoom H5 Portable Handy Recorder can be connected to a multibox or other conference room audio system to capture clean audio.
Q: 4. Does the zoom h5 has a power plug (ac\dc or usb)? i know that in the spec it is written that it has/ im asking because i have the zomm h2d and it also written there that the Power Options are Batteries, USB Bus Power, AC/DC Power Adapter - and its not correct. there is no ac\dc option and the usb option is only for recording to a compouter.
A: Yes, you can connect the included USB cable to the Zoom AD-17 AC adapter (not included) to power the H5.
Q: 5. Need to clarify previous question: Can I use the capsules in addition to two separate mono mics, resulting in 2 channels for the stereo capsules and 1 each for the external mic inputs?
A: You can use the mic capsules and two separate mono mics resulting in 1 stereo track (2 channels) and two separate mono tracks for each external microphone.
Q: 6. Battery types seem to be restricted to Alkaline and NiMH. Can the H5 accept AA Lithium batteries?
A: No problem at all. The Lithium AA will offer hours of extended performance over standard alkaline types.
Q: 7. can I use the Rode Go II (or any other) wireless transmitter to record using a 3.5 plug?
A: Rode Go II comes with a SC5 3.5mm TRS Cable that you can use to connect the receiver to the 1/8'' mic input, located on the left-hand side of the X-Y mic module on the Zoom H5 recorder.
Q: 8. do i need special adapter cable to connect DSLR Canon 60d camera?
A: you can run a 3.5mm m/m cable from the Zoom to the 60D - makes it easier to sync audio - at least that is how I do it
Q: 9. I tried using the Rode Videomic Pro with my Zoom H1 in a DIY boom setup. H1 maxes out (100) to hit -12db, which obviously isnt a good way to record and evidently sounds hissy/hummy/noisy. Would Zoom H5 be a significant improvement over H1 in that regard? Are its amps more powerful? Would it record much better/cleaner audio (hitting -12db) at maybe 60-70 as opposed to 100 on the H1, which would be kinda ideal I guess?
A: The Zoom H5 would definitely be a huge improvement. Not only are you getting xlr inputs, but Zoom made better quality/cleaner/less noisy mic pres in those xlr inputs. Even comparing the H5 to the old H4N which has xlr inputs as well, you can clearly hear a difference in sound quality. Less gain is required before noise starts.
Q: 10. Does this come with the MS mic as well as the X/Y mic ?
A: The Zoom H5 4-Input / 4-Track Portable Handy Recorder includes the Zoom XYH-5 - X/Y Microphone Capsule with purchase, but does not include the MSH-6 Mid-Side Microphone Capsule (BH #ZOZMSH6). This item can be added separately and used interchangeably with the H5 as desired: https://bhpho.to/39sjhHP
