The RSH-4S Custom Rackmount Enclosure (Black Textured Powder Coat) from Middle Atlantic is a flexible solution that lets you mount virtually any non-rackmount component in a standard 19" rack or enclosure without making any modifications.

The solution is made possible by custom cutting the face of the rackmount unit to work perfectly with the piece of equipment that you specify. The result is a neatly trimmed installation, with a snug fit and no gaps. Middle Atlantic has more than 8,000 components in its measurement database that can be matched with this unit.

A ventilated bottom on this unit ensures adequate cooling. The included rear brackets prevent the mounted component from sliding out the rear of the enclosure.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Does 'browser based' Synology DSM mean it has to have an internet connection? Probably a dumb question...

A: By default, Synology NAS units are connected to a network. The interface is Synology's Disk Station Manager (DSM) which is a browser-based interface - you use your computer's browser to access the Synology. There is a whole setup procedure that does require the Synology be connected to a network that can access the Internet for updates and remote access if you want.

Q: 2. I have never owned a RAID 5 device before. I will be needing it for large video projects. 1) If a drive goes down will the rebuild automatically happen when a new drive is swapped in? 2) Will this rebuild happen even if the computer I am using at the time doesn't have SoftRaid installed? 3) Will the system be able to continue to run even with one drive down? (While I am waiting for a new drive? 4) How often in your experience has a drive failed?

A: The answer is that if the Thunderbay comes pre-formatted (and it should), then it will work -- you just have to pay attention when the computer warns you there might be a format or journal error on the hard drive and make sure you replace the damaged drive with the exact same model internal hard drive. It's also recommended that you spend the extra money now to purchase that exact internal hard drive now just in case its discontinued later and so you can swap it out immediately if there is a problem. The extra drive is an expense but it's better than losing a project. As an archivist, I would also recommend getting an LTO tape drive for backup, but as a small company, I admit we don't do this while I'm working -- only after a restoration is completed. What I do is duplicate my files out on other hard drive systems for safety. (Yes, I have a lot of hard drives.) I have two Thunderbays and two Mercury Elite Qx2 and only had one of the latter failed so far -- a lost journal -- and Data Rescue software saved everything.

Q: 3. What UPS Surge Protection would you recommend for this product?

A: A UPS such as the CyberPower CP1500AVR (BH #CYCP1500AVRL) would be a good choice for use with this NAS.

Q: 4. Does latest Synology firmware/software support larger than 18tb drives yet?

A: The Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure does show compatibility with a 20TB Drive, model HAT5310-20T.

Q: 5. do all the hard drives have to have the same capacity? Can I have 2x 12TB a 14TB and an 18TB?

A: While you technically can use drives of different capacities in the Synology DiskStation DS1522+ 5-Bay NAS Enclosure, it's not recommended to do this as performance can be impacted based on the way you have the enclosure configured. For example, if you have the NAS in RAID 5, then all drives on the NAS will operate with the capacity of the lowest capacity drive in the enclosure; if you have two 12TB, a 14TB, and an 18TB drive, then all 4 would operate as though they're all 12TB drives.

Q: 6. Does this require Synology HDD's?? Or can I use a 3rd party like Iron Wolf?

A: You can fill this Synology DiskStation DS1823xs+ 8-Bay NAS Enclosure with Synology's drives, or other 3.5mm drives such as the Seagate IronWolf Pro, or WD Red Pro drives.

Q: 7. Do you need to install 4 drives to use this enclosure with RAID or can you install only 2 drives and add more later?

A: Yes, you can start with 2 drives!

Q: 8. Can I back up another NAS I already own (DS1621+) to this NAS from a different physical location?

A: Yes, as long as the Synology DiskStation DS224+ 2-Bay NAS Enclosure is loaded with enough drive capacity to cover everything in the NAS you already own, it could work as a backup in a different physical location.

Q: 9. What is the maximum RAM that can be installed?

A: The Synology DiskStation DS223j 2-Bay NAS Enclosure's RAM can not be upgraded.

Q: 10. Is there a specific surge protector that work with this device? And what size would you recommend Thanks Dominik

A: There are a wide range of options. This could be one option and its also on the manufacturer list of tested UPS. BH #CYCP850PFCV2
