Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is this lens compatible with the D200?

A: Yes.

Q: 2. is this lens weather sealed?

A: Yes, the Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S lens is weather sealed.

Q: 3. Does this lens come with the lens hood?

A: Yes, this lens comes with the Nikon HB-31 Lens Hood.

Q: 4. This lens does not have image stabilization built in. Normally, I only purchase lenses that have this feature, but hundreds of people seem to love this lens. Does the lack of stabilization negatively affect photo capture when being hand-held, or not? Thanks!

A: The AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED has a superb zoom range for a DX sensor camera and will be your workhorse for 90% of your photography needs. The image quality is superb as well with the f/2.8 the icing on the cake.Vibration reduction (image stabilization in Nikon argot) is a terrific tool but it should be remembered billions of excellent hand held photos have been made without it in the history of photography. I would surmise that Nikon felt with the fast f/2.8, you have shutter speeds that make it possible to overcome shake or subject movement. Another thing to consider is vibration reduction could possibly make the lens more expensive. If you must have image stabilization, you can get the slower variable-aperture Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR Lens B&H # NI168028VR.

Q: 5. Is this compatible with D7500? 17-55mm or 24-70mm?

A: Both would be compatible. I don't have the 24-70, but I LOVE my 17-55. It is so great for travel and because of the wide lens is excellent for landscape and architecture. Very versatile lens.

Q: 6. I want to use this with 4 BlackMagic Studio 6k Pro cameras does the RJ45 port allow me to pass through tally and Talkback ?

A: The Hollyland Syscom 421S 4-Transmitter 1800' A/V Transmission System does offer Tally however, it does not support talkback.

Q: 7. The manual states "THE DEVICE IP IS 192.168.218.X NETWORK SEGMENT". Can that be changed? Or is it stuck on the factory subnet?

A: No, according to the manufacturer, the IP address on the Hollyland Syscom 421S 4-Transmitter 1800' A/V Transmission System cannot be changed and will remain on the default setting.

Q: 8. I'm torn between this lens and the 24-70 f/2.8 Nikon lens. I currently own a D7100 (primary) and an older D80 (backup)...At this point, I only own two lenses - a Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 (which came with the D80) and the Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 zoom - I want something better on the low end of the spectrum - i.e an every day lens for the 7100 and move the 18-200 to the D80. I was thinking of sacrificing the 6mm and filling that slot and range with the 24-70mm but am now wondering if the 17-55 might not be a better choice. How much am I really going to notice that difference between 55mm and 70mm? Any advice?

A: I would generally recommend the 17-55 lens for the D7100 or the D80. The 17-55 for APS-C sensor size cameras is meant to mimic the 24-70mm for full frame cameras. Between 55-70mm you won't see much of a difference, but you do notice the difference between 17mm's and 24mm's. I think it's helpful to have the extra wide angle. You noted that you have the 80-200mm which is a fine zoom lens. I don't think you will miss much between 55 and 80mm's. I do think the 17-55 is a better choice.

Q: 9. Is this Nikon AF-S DX 17-55mm F/2.8G ED Zoom compatible with a Nikon TC-14E lll 1.4x Teleconverter?

A: Unfortunately Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-NIKKOR 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED Lens is not compatible with Nikon TC-14E lll 1.4x Teleconverter.

Q: 10. Have any other owners had a problem with the weather seal ring coming loose on the mount? If so, have you sent it in for repair? Just curious about how long it took and about how much it cost.

A: In general we have had very few complaints out the Nikon 17-55 lens. It has a 5 year warranty from Nikon in the event you have any issues.

Having just retired my Mamiya RZ system, the 17-55/D2XS combo has me feeling 10 yrs younger !! This lens covers the focal length of three of my Mamiya lenses. Focus' fast in low light and quiet too ! The zoom ring is right where it should be. Now maybe I can't enlarge every photo to a 30X40...but certainly a 16X20 ! I use this set up along with a 70-200VR/D2XS combo at weddings and I must say I'm much happier after 7 hours on my feet ! Expertise: PRO Previous Equivalent Item Owned: S3 Fuji, RZPRO MAMIYA 4-LENSES Items I Recommend: SB800 FLASH, QUANTUM RADIO FLASH, LUMEDYNE

If you are in to blurry background as much as I do, this is a must have, a very sharp lens with really smooth bokeh. Worth it, not to mention the great built quality.

I'll be using this lens mostly for weddings, portraits, and as a walkaround on a D300 and a D70. I've been considering this lens for quite some time, but it is expensive. What I wanted from this lens is a constant 2.8 with excellent center sharpness. It provides both. I tested several Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC as well as a Tokina 16-50 2.8. The Tokina came close in build quality but not quite as sharp. The Tamron was very dissapointing wide open, the build quality also felt very plasticy like something that would not last very long. The Nikkon 17-55 provides excellent quality photos, focuses very fast and sharp. I've been using a 18-200 VR for some time as well as a 18-55VR, what a world of difference. I'm also surprised at how close to an object you can get for some real closeups. I've heard lots of remarks about this lens being real heavy. I guess its what you're accustomed to. It feels good especially on my D300. This lens would be made better if it also had VR and a slightly longer focal range, possibly 70mm? All in all this was money well spent.

This is the best lens I have owned. It's amazingly sharp, and focuses very fast. It has some distortion, but not morethan typical for this type of zoom, and less than I expectedfrom reading reviews before I bought it. It's very heavy, and very solid. Since it has some sealing(like the D200), I don't worry about using it in rain orsnow. Absolutely no problems after a month of reckless usein weather that might have caused problems with a differentlens. There have been some comments about stiff zoom at the end ofthe range, but I think you will have to look for it to notice.I think the zoom ring fits perfect for the hand. I haven'treally used the manual focus. I recommend the MB-D200 gripif you use this with a D200, as it improves the balance a lot. Perfect match with the 70-200 F2.8 (and maybe a superwide angle such as the Sigma 10-20mm too). Problems Encountered: Obscures the built-in D200 flash below 30mm, and at alltimes if the humongous hood is on. Previous Equivalent Items Owned: DX: 18-70mm 3.5-4.5, AF for 35mm: 85mm F1.8, 24mm F2.8, 180mm F2.8. Items I Recommend: D200, MB-D200
