Q: 1. What is the difference between this lens and the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens, other than around a $4000 price difference?
A: The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4G ED VR listed above was originally released in 2007. The new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR lens, released last year in 2015, uses Nikon's latest technology providing enhanced autofocus tracking and improved optical performance, with fluorite lens elements which help in both reducing chromatic aberration and decreasing the weight of the lens. The new lens weighs 8.3 lbs (as opposed to the 11.5 lbs of the lens you list above, almost 3 lbs lighter, which will be advantageous for long sports games or wildlife shooting). The new Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4E FL ED VR Lens also has an electromagnetic diaphragm to assist in maintaining consistent exposures when shooting fast action and using continuous burst shooting.
Q: 2. Hi, Is this lens still being manufactured or has Nikon dropped it?
A: A high quality lens like this can be hard to find. You may find one in the used lens department.
Q: 3. Is there a teleconverter that will work with this lens?
A: Kenko makes good teleconverters for the Nikon 55-200. The ones in this link are compatible. http://bhpho.to/1h0SErb
Q: 4. is this lens compatible with Nikon D3200?
A: Yes, this lens is compatible with the Nikon D3200.
Q: 5. Compatible with a d70?
A: Yes, the AF-S lenses are compatible with the D70.
Q: 6. Does this lens (purchased new) come with the HB-36 hood?
A: My lens did come with the lens hood. I like the fact that the hood can be reverse-mounted when I'm not using the lens affording a little more protection in the camera bag. I've been very happy with the results I've gotten with the lens. I'd rate the quality as very high. It's fairly heavy. I'd make sure you want to carry the weight while you're out shooting.
Q: 7. I guess my question is very hard to answer( keep the 500mm or purchase the 600mm if price did not matter) Lets talk about birding @ 500ft or so, now both lenses provide quality images but as owners personal point of view would you stay with the lighter 500mm tripod mounted or move up to the heavier 600mm also tripod mounted? Do you feel that in your opinion the 500mm has an edge over the 600mm or not?
A: As I had said in a previous answer: I feel no need to buy to 600. It is very heavy, eliminating any possibility of hand-held shots. I get good IQ with the 500 with 1.4x and 1.7x teleconverters. The cost of the 600 would be very extravagant when added to the cost of the 500.I went through this process in December of last year, I chose the 500 over the 600.
Q: 8. Do I get this one or the Sigma 70-300mm ? I currently have Nikkon AF Nikkor 70-300 4-5.6G .....
A: I like this Nikkor lens a lot. I shoot it wide open and sharpness is very good (not excellent but a quick shot of mild unsharp mask in PS cleans it up nicely.) The auto focus is fast enough for birds in flight and it tracks well.
Q: 9. will this work for Coolpix l810?
A: this lens is intended for a Nikon SLR-type digital camera and cannot be used for a point-and-shoot, like a Coolpix
Q: 10. compatible with the D80?
A: The Nikon AF-S 18-55mm lens is fully compatible with the D80.
