Related Questions and Answers
Q: 1. what is the minimum sheet size for this printer?thank you
A: It can use anything from 4x6 to 13x19 inches.
Q: 2. Will it handle transparency sheets? Can I print wirelessly from my computer?
A: I only use this printer wirelessly from three different computers. A Compaq, a Lenovo, and the afore mentioned iPad mini. Yes it is large, maximum print width is 13 inches. There has to be room for the print carriage to clear the paper at both ends. If you want large prints it takes a large printer.
Q: 3. I have El Capitan operating system - is this printer compatible?
A: It works with both, my MacBook Pro laptop and Mini, yes! Now, the ink is another issue, it would not last long if you use the printer once a week/month. In between, it just dries out. Every day use, that's OK. Big prints - amazing!
Q: 4. does this printer have a paper feed tray on the back like the canon pro-100?
A: No this would not.
Q: 5. What thickness/weight of paper can it print on? Could it handle a 100lb cover weight paper?
A: In consumer printers like the Canon PIXMA iP8720 you would want to keep the thickness of the paper at, or below 13 mil (about 0.013) thick.
Q: 6. One Q&A said the paper tray is in the rear . What does this mean? Can I use this as a printer for printing, say, Word or Excel documents and does it have a paper tray like the cheaper all-in-ones that can be used for this purpose? And, of course, for printing high quality photos, which would be the reason I'd buy this!
A: Hi, John -- The ip8720's rear paper tray is actually a flip-up shelf that feeds paper down and directly through the printer for processing. It is one of the main reasons (plus high photo-print-quality) that I bought this model; my ip7220 lacks this tray. The advantage is that the paper follows gravity and follows a pretty straight path, minimizing paper jams and misfeeds. The down-side is that paper left sitting in it may bend and warp over time; and it does leave the printer's innards open to dust and dirt. The ip8720 also has the bottom tray, a design used in most printers, dedicated, printer-only models as well as all-in-ones, from HP, Epson, etc., as well as Canon. While it does keep the paper flat, it's a paper-jam-and-misfeed nightmare (esp with thicker paper and greeting cards), because of the convoluted paper-path (pulled up against gravity, then making a 180-degree bend and coming back out the same side). I much prefer top-feed.You can certainly use this for Word and Excel docs (it's really too much printer for them, but I use it that way, too); tho the primary focus and benefit of the ip8720 (with its large size and small, costly ink-cartridges) is top-notch photo-printing.
Q: 7. Is Canon Premium Fine Art Smooth paper compatible with the iP8720? 310 GSM, 16.5 MIL
A: Canon does not list its PIXMA iP8720 Wireless Inkjet Photo Printer (B&H# CAIP8720) as being compatible with its Canon Premium Fine Art Smooth Paper (13 x 19", 25 Sheets) (B&H# CA1711C004), nor vice versa. To be clear, Canon officially gives a listing of the Canon papers that will work with this printer (see p.195 of the manual) and the one you asked about is clearly excluded. Notably, it’s 50 gsm heavier than the heaviest of them. Speaking generally, in such a situation, even if such especially heavy and thick paper does make it through a printer (which is likely in this case), it can happen that the springs used to give the rollers the right amount of tension to grip the paper may be overly compressed by the paper’s weight and thickness. The consequence of that excessive compression can be that the tension is reduced and so the rollers subsequently have difficulty gripping thinner papers. There are also cases in which a printer’s print head may even experience too much friction with overly thick papers and thus the prints come out poorly, if at all. Having said all of that, there's no question that the paper itself would do well with the ink, and if you use individual, flat, and unbent sheets of such paper in the top-rear feed then you will get the best result possible. For all the reasons mentioned, we just cannot endorse doing that.
Q: 8. Does this printer print well on extra-heavy card stock?
A: No. It is recommended for use with plain document, photo papers, and envelopes.
Q: 9. How will this printer work with my iMac?
A: Just for laughs I tried printing from an iPad Mini with out setting up the iPad with the software and I opened, turned on and started printing quite quickly. It was a printed document. I have not tried printing images from the iPad.
Q: 10. Would I be able to scan and print old photos ? Or do I need separate scanner?
A: This printer doesn't have a scanner.
