Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. What does the ED on the lens stand for? the lens i want to replace does not have that on it

A: ED refers to Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element which minimizes chromatic aberration for superior optical performance.

Q: 2. How do you protect the front element of these large telephotos against dust and scratches?

A: There is not any conventional type filter made for these lenses due to their massive size and the cost it would incur. The lenses are super-coated with multiple protective coatings to prevent scratches and dust etc that one would commonly encounter when using this type of lens in the field. Further it is recommended to use the lens' hood for extra protection. Also in the Accessories tab on the link for this lens, we have many options for neoprene hood hats, neoprene lens covers and other protective products designed to protect the lens when used in the field.

Q: 3. will this work on the D3100?

A: Yes, this lens is an AF-S lens and has the required built-in motor in order to autofocus with the D3100 camera.

Q: 4. what is the difference between active and normal on the lens

A: Active vs. normal is a reference to the Vibration Reduction feature of the Nikon AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED lens. Active mode effectively compensates image blur caused when shooting from a moving vehicle, or some other unstable position, providing stable viewfinder images and blur-corrected captured images, whereas normal VR is more suitable for general use and camera shake.

Q: 5. Will this lense work with my new nikon series 1 j 4 compact camera. ? I have heard that they have come out with a new lense for nikon series 1 cameras, does it mean my old VR lense is not compatible with my J 4? Would appreciate any help!

A: The Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras have a different mount from the Nikon DSLRs, so lenses such as the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Lens cannot mount on the Nikon 1 cameras. You would need an adapter to use Nikon DSLR lenses on the Nikon mirrorless cameras.

Q: 6. Does this lens requires body af fine tuning?

A: At this time I haven't needed to do any fine tuning. I am using it on a Nikon D750 and a D7000. I anticipate using it on the D500 in the future.

Q: 7. D300 compatible?

A: The Nikon AF-S 55-200mm lens will be compatible with the D300, yes.

Q: 8. Just wanted to make sure it is also compatible with a Nikon D60. yes?

A: Yes, the Nikon 18-55 AF-S lens is fully compatible with a Nikon D60.

Q: 9. Whenever I shake the back side of lens near my ear i hear a sound that something is moving inside the lens. However it is working properly when mounted. Is this normal?

A: I have one and it doesn't make any sound when I shake it. As long as it's working, that's a good thing!

Q: 10. If I am shooting moving objects and I have currently the Nikon 55-300, is it worth the upgrade to the 70-300? What differences will I notice?

A: Im considering buying the 70-300. I just went to Best Buy to compare these 2 lenses side by side. I was impressed with both but the 70-300 auto focus was noticeably faster. Other than that there wasnt much difference. I think this lens will work better if you shoot sports. Also I like the manual focus ring on this lens better than the 55-300

I was hesitant to pickup this lens as I was unsure what type of quality I was going to be getting in relation to the cost. I have owned numerous Canon L lenses before, and if it wasn't over 1K, I didn't care for the results. Much to my very pleasant surprise, this lends FAR exceeds my expectations. It is also my first Nikon big lens. Superb in every aspect, I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for this type of reach. The results are simply stunning. Build quality is exceptional, and I feel this lens is a fantastic overall value at this price!

Very happy with this lens, MUCH sharper (at 300mm) than my old Quantaray 70-300. I am sold on Nikon glass!

Great lens for when your subjects are in close proximity - but has enough zoom to get the shot from across the room, too. Easy to attach and remove.

I had a 300 Nikkor 4.5 I did not carry because of it's weight. This lens is at least as good if not better that. The VR takes a litter getting used to but when you do it works great. I have always had a little difficulty with 300mm being steady but not with this lens. Macro shot a great and a lot of fun with this.

Wasn't sure if it would be fast enough for the sports I shoot, especially since I use the 70-200 2.8, but I have not missed a shot yet. Easy to zoom, fast focus. I'd love a 300 or 400 prime, but this does a good job!

This lens is very light and compact. It uses 52mm filters and I have had better results using a 10x macro filter on this lens than my fixed 50mm lens even though the 50mm has a lower f-stop. It's a good general purpose landscape and portrait lens and at around a $it's a great deal.
