Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. the wedge is included in the package right?

A: In the Box: iOptron SkyTracker Pro Camera Mount with Polar Scope (Mount Only) Padded Carrying Case Micro-USB Charging Cable AccuAligning Polar Scope Limited 1-Year Warranty

Q: 2. Is it’s dovetail foot suitable for Meade 6000 series 115mm refractor?

A: You would need this finder scope base: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1046161-REG/explore_scientific_fndrbaseblk_finder_scope_base.html

Q: 3. Can I solar align in the daytime to photograph the eclipse ?

A: Exposures will be so relatively short accurate polar alignment will not be necessary. Simply point the mount to magnetic north and that will be more than sufficient; especially since the camera lens focal length will be under 500mm, I assume.

Q: 4. I am in Ecuador, just 200 miles south of the equator. Will this work at a latitude of almost 0?

A: Short answer is yes. But the polar scope will be of no use since both the north and south poles will not be visible. Your polar axis will be essentially horizontal. You will need to line up this axis so it points south. There will be a lot of torque on this axis from your camera load, so keep it simple! I'd suggest contacting the manufacturer for advice.

Q: 5. Accepts cameras weighing up to 3 kg (6.6 lbs) Is the weight of the ball head and optional counter weight kit included in the weight limit?

A: That is the mount alone without the Ball Head, and Counter Weight added.

Q: 6. How is the Skytracker programmed or set to track the sky based on location, season and time?

A: You simply use the included polar scope to do a polar alignment. Once it is polar aligned it will automatically rotate at the speed set with the selector switch whenever the power switch is turned on. This will give a rough polar alignment and ok tracking accuracy. For better tracking accuracy there are Apps available which allow you to enter your precise location and will then show precisely where in the polar scope reticle to align the pole star. This will give you the best accuracy possible with this unit.

Q: 7. Hello. How well does the rechargeable battery perform in cold weather? best skies are often in the dead of winter. Thanks in advance.

A: I've used it in the cold mountain-top but have not run the battery down, most I've seen is about 4 hours use with battery still doing well. I do take a USB battery tank along as a backup.

Q: 8. Is the scope able to perform a good alignment with the South Pole, for those in the Southern Hemisphere? Or is it only good for the northern hemisphere users?

A: It is possible, but far from easy & a solid working knowledge of the Sth Polar region of the sky is required. Sigma Octantis suffers from being sufficiently faint that once it is naked-eye visible, it is indistinct from its surrounding background of almost equally faint stars. Decent approximate alignment for exposures 30s with wider lenses can be achieved with the 'scope removed by using the opening for it as a sighting hole for the Crux/Centaurus (pointers) method. Precise adjustment is fiddly & best practised in daylight using a terrestrial landmark to familiarise yourself with those controls first. That said, this device is a tiny fraction of the price of a cheap Equatorial telescope mount, (& that will also need aligning). This instrument needs practise & patience to get good results from it & it would be unrealistic to expect to get great photos on your first few times in the field with it. Q: 9. Does this come with the alt/azi base or not? The manual leads one to believe BOTH the Tracker and alt/azi base are sold together for $299

A: Yes the the Alt Az base is Black and the motorized part with battery is Red. It comes with everything including a USB cord for charging and Polar scope.

Q: 10. Can this be used to photograph deep space objects like the Orion nebula? I am planning to use my tamron 150-600 on a Sony A7R2. Would it work with this combo?

A: Yes however I would recommend getting the Ball Head, and Counter Weight with that set up. So it can support that weight.

I've been doing astrophotography since days of using hypered film, and typically piggyback on one of my telescopes. However, it is a hassle and I tend not to shoot as much as I'd like. So - I wanted a tracker. Did lots of research and ended up with the Skytracker Pro. Polar alignment is easy. Build quality is very good. Easy to use and operate. Make sure you use a heavy-duty tripod. Use a good ball joint. iOptron makes one, but there are many available. I personally use Sirui ball joints. I use only prime focus lenses, as they are lighter (in general) to zooms, and they are typically much Sharper - and provide better center of gravity reducing balance issues. I use a range of lenses; 10.5mm full-frame fisheye, 16mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and a 300mm mirror lens (Yes, a mirror lens. It is very light and small and works great for this mount). With these lenses my maximum weight with camera and ball joint is max about 4 pounds. That is another reason I chose the Skytracker Pro because I did not want to have to use a counter-weight system. I just want to set up and shoot. I do highly recommend using a Lonely Speck SharpStar precision focusing filter - you will get perfect image focus, period (which is vey hard otherwise for astro work). Make sure to tighten everything up or you will have problems. My only gripe with B&H is that I wanted the red one, but received the black one.
I've included the very first image I shot using the Skytracker Pro. The day I received it I set it up and went out at night and it was pretty clear out. I shot 20 photos in succession with Nikon 85mm at f3.5 ISO 1600 20 seconds each. Stacked them in Photoshop and this is the result. I live at the beach in Florida, and it is dark where I live, but the air is thick at times. After I stacked in PS, I was amazed at the image quality using the Skytracker Pro. Love it and definitely recommend it.

Wow! It sure is a pleasure to use a well designed, crafted, and executed piece of hardware, that works as advertised! It is amazing how pleasurable it makes the task (for a beginner like me) to use the 'proper tool for the job'. I really can't compare it to other offerings, but, this one is just a joy to use. I was able to make an accurate polar alignment in less than 5 minutes, spend most of my time (about 5 min) trying to focus at infinity in the dark, and then take many great 30 sec exposures with my 200mm kit zoom lens! I also purchased the associated Ball Head v2 and the 1.25 Stainless Steel Tripod for SmartEQ and SkyTracker-- they all work so well together.

I have been doing tracked astrophotography for decades. Previously I had done it with my cameras piggybacked on a telescope or directly mounted on a German Equatorial Mount. I finally decided to try out using a sky tracking camera mount and decided on the iOptron SkyTracker Pro because it (with the optional Counterweight Kit) could handle my Nikon D7200 DSLR + Tamron 150-600mm lens. For wide angle sky astrophotography (8mm fisheye, 18mm) the SkyTracker worked well. But what really surprised me was how well it tracked when using a 300mm lens and even the 600mm focal length. I was able to photograph the Andromeda Galaxy and the Horsehead Nebula. If you live in a dark sky location like I do, you should give night sky photography a try. Using the iOptron SkyTracker Pro you will get some amazing photos!

I have tested this unit only once. It showed good tracking- nice round stars after a two minute exposure. That said, I was using an 18mm focal length, so this wasn't a challenge trial. The polar alignment scope is a pleasure to use and very accurate

This is a nice product, seems really well built and is very compact making it easy to transport around with your other gear. Shipping was nice and quick from the US. If you are new to the whole tracking thing then the instructions are a bit cryptic and you need to do some research and learning to figure out some of what it is talking about. You also need to buy an app (ideally) to help you with polar alignment but hey it's only 2 bucks! Note that in the southern hemisphere you need to align to polaris australis which is quite low down in the southern sky and quite faint. You need nice dark skies in order to polar align accurately otherwise you are manually aligning which is never perfect.

I am very pleased with this unit which is replacing the original SkyTracker camera mount. I now have the capability to track on the Sun (for the Solar Eclipse in Aug 2017) and on the Moon which I could not do with the original camera mount.

I purchased this for the August 21 eclipse which was also the first time I used it. Despite my lack of experience or practice with it beforehand, I managed to accomplish a daytime polar alignment using an app and I was able to get everything set up without a problem. The Skytracker Pro performed great despite the fact that I was using gear that was heavier than the specs on unit provided. I am not impressed by most things I buy, but this time I definitely was!

My first couple nights using this were tough, not gonna lie. I live south of Buffalo, NY and I deal with a lot of light pollution up north. That being said it's hard to distinguish Polaris when polar aligning. This whole week the skies have been clear and after a week I have my setup all ready within 10 minutes max. I used a couple lens with the largest being a 300mm focal length and at 3 minutes with that I got no star trails. This is definitely worth the price and more and I highly recommend this for a starter star tracker!

Compared to original version this is a big improvement. Listing them here: 1) No more carrying AA batteries and working with that bad battery cover in older version. Now you can charge it through USB and rated for 24 hours. 2) Form factor is smaller and well balanced than older version 3) The removable base is a great addition and it is improved compared to older version. If you have ball head add a right plate to the device and you don't have to carry another weight in your bag 4) Easy to align with ioptron polar app and works without scope for 2 minute exposures 5) For more than 2 minute exposures polar align is necessary and its easy to do with the app. 6) Have a polaris finder app so you can point it at the right direction with latitude adjusted on the base first. 7) I added RRS BH-30 ball head which is the best light weight option and works well. I don't have any CONS as of now and I bought this device directly from iOptron as I stumbled upon this release when I was trying to buy older version. Warning: Do not I repeat Do not add ball head to the device without removing the plate off the device. I would have destroyed my OTUS 28mm and camera by doing this. The reason being when you screw ball head without removing the plate it unscrews at the bottom where you can switch out 3/8 to 1/4 threads. Always remove the plate to tighten the ball head, I was lucky nothing bad happened and I notice towards the end of my exposures. Hope you enjoy this device like I do.
