The beige E6i (Waterproof 2.5mm) from Countryman is a miniature, omnidirectional, earset condenser microphone designed for accurate voice reproduction (speaking and singing) and near-invisible appearance in theater, concerts, lectures, houses or worship, and more. It features a water- and wind-resistant capsule that delivers a 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response. The omnidirectional polar pattern picks up sound from all directions and should be used when feedback is not common.

The 5’ detachable cable has a diameter of 1mm, and features a waterproof 2.5mm connector for compatibility with Lectrosonics transmitters. The E6i offers a flexible boom for versatile placement. The three protective caps yield different high-end frequency presence. The supplied windscreen protects the condenser element, and reduces plosives and wind noise. Cable clips and a carrying case are included.

A miniature omnidirectional capsule is mounted to a low-profile, flexible frame with silicon ear section. This lightweight, unobtrusive design is available in various colors that virtually render the entire microphone invisible against the skin. For more information on which color earset suits you best, refer to the Countryman support page.

The included 1mm diameter cable detaches from the actual headset, making it completely replaceable in the event of a short or break. The replaceable cable design makes upgrading wireless microphone systems easy, as they are available in a wide selection of connections to accommodate various wireless transmitters.

The omnidirectional polar pattern is most effective in minimizing wind noise, plosives (popping) and handling noise. The flexible boom provides a custom fit for multiple users and close microphone positioning while minimizing off-axis noise. The E6i is also available in a cardioid version for maximum off-axis noise rejection in environments with high feedback and noise.

This E6i sensitivity response is optimized to accurately capture both speech and vocal performances without noise and distortion.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Need to clarify previous question: Can I use the capsules in addition to two separate mono mics, resulting in 2 channels for the stereo capsules and 1 each for the external mic inputs?

A: You can use the mic capsules and two separate mono mics resulting in 1 stereo track (2 channels) and two separate mono tracks for each external microphone.

Q: 2. This H5 currently offers an Auray remote free but I need to also get an AC plug and only see one for this unit offered in an accessory kit that has a remote which I would already have. Is there any way to buy just the AC plug for this unit?

A: Allison, i just opened mine a few days ago and have been impressed. If you read the directions it says that the usb that comes with it will power it which surprised me. I havent tried it yet. It also acts as a two or four mic usb interface for recording. So i plan to test that soon.

Q: 3. I'd like to record myself talking for a podcast. Does the mid/side capsule point towards the front or the back?

A: Consider the MS like ur face and ur hands open. so the M is your face and the S is the sides of ur hands. we would record MS typically for capturing ambience as well within the recording on a separate (S) track. I wouldn't advise it for podcast . The best thing you can for podcast is the following: direct one of the Stereo mic that comes with the H5 towards you so the other would be actually rejecting ur voice. on any editing software separate the left from right and cancel the one rejecting your voice. This way, you will maximise your direct sound. do not forget to put the sponge filter of course.

Q: 4. How long it can record for 32G card?

A: The maximum recording time for a given card will depend on the recording format that you use as well as how many tracks of audio you will be recording at once. When using a 32GB and recording a stereo 44.1kHz/16bit audio file, the H5 can hold up to 48hrs of audio.

Q: 5. Is this a purely manual recorder, or can it be set to set volume automatically?

A: Recording can be started and stopped automatically in response to the input level. All input volume (gain) levels can be adjusted quickly by hand using dedicated knobs. Back-up recording gain is automatically set -12dB.

Q: 6. How do the preamps on the H5 compare to those on the H4n and H6?

A: Sane as the H6 preamps and is way better then the H4n.

Q: 7. If one records a scale played on the piano, when the recording is played back at a slowed speed, does the frequency of the notes (pitch) change? Is there a recorder that will playback the music slower (than the original speed, tempo) without changing the frequency (pitch) of these notes?

A: This is not a function of the recorder. You want to look at audio editing software. If you aren't ready to invest (I use Adobe Audition, but the subscription to Adobe Creative Suite is $600/yr), then look at freeware like Audacity, which is pretty great for freeware. I'm 99% sure Audacity can do speed change without pitch change. And Audacity is pretty easy to learn, if you're not too impatient.

Q: 8. Battery types seem to be restricted to Alkaline and NiMH. Can the H5 accept AA Lithium batteries?

A: No problem at all. The Lithium AA will offer hours of extended performance over standard alkaline types.

Q: 9. Does the H5 compressor/limiter send a live compressed signal to the line output? For example: when connected to a camera, does the H5 compress the line out to prevent a clipped in-camera recording?

A: If the compressor/limiter on the H5 is engaged, your output signal will be compressed. However, clipping in the camera is not determined by this alone. If one connects a line-level output into a mic-level input, distortion in the camera is inevitable. Also, if the input level is set too high on the camera, one runs the risk of clipping as well. If plugging into a mic input, using a cable with built-in attenuation is ideal; B&H # SEL2MZH4N6.

Q: 10. I have the Zoom H5 and love its performance in the field. My question is, is there a cable that could connect the H5 directly to the new MacBook M1 Max (USB-C ports) to use for things such as voiceover, podcast, or even Zoom/Teams? Has anyone used this as a "plug-and-play" style microphone, if it's even capable of doing so?

A: The Zoom H5 4-Input / 4-Track Portable Handy Recorder with Interchangeable X/Y Mic Capsule is specified as compatible with M1-based Apple computers and could surely serve as the audio source for various interface applications. The easiest way to connect to USB-C type inputs would be to adapt its standard USB-A cable connection with BH #APMJ1M2AMA Apple USB Type-C to USB Type-A Adapter: https://bhpho.to/3sWyl6J
