Customize your tone and capture quality sound indoors or outside for your next indie film, TV shoot, or documentary project with the Rode NTG4+ battery- or phantom-powered shotgun microphone. Specialized features such as low-noise circuitry, digitally switchable pad and frequency settings, and minimal handling noise reduce the need to repair and restore audio in post production.

The elevated sensitivity of the NTG4+ allows it to produce strong output levels without having to apply extreme gain at your mic preamp. Sonically, the NTG4+ delivers warm sound due in part to its gentle dip in high frequencies and its rumble-reducing selectable low-cut filter. A switchable treble boost is on hand for situations where additional clarity is needed.

The combination of the 10.9" long body and supercardioid polar pattern yields focused front-facing directionality and enhanced attenuation of sound entering from the sides. Its low self-noise of 16 dBA and sensitive condenser element communicate detailed audio unburdened by the hiss that plagues many low-cost microphones. Plus, its balanced output allows longer cable runs than most camera-mount shotgun microphones.

Operate the NTG4+ on 48V phantom power or via its internal rechargeable lithium battery, which provides up to 150 hours of run time. The micro-USB port and supplied USB cable enable easy recharging in just two hours—charge the NTG4+ via a computer, power brick, or vehicle. Thanks to its 3-pin XLR output, the NTG4+ is compatible with a variety of handheld audio recorders, field recorders, and mixer adapters as well as built-in preamps on many camcorders and cinema cameras.

Digital switching not only allows for intuitive access to the mic's settings, but it also retains their states when the mic is switched off. Activate the 75 Hz low-cut filter to reduce low-frequency noise from common sources such as air conditioners and traffic. Use the +6 dB treble boost for enhanced clarity and intelligibility (best for environments with minimal high-frequency ambient noise). When loud sound sources threaten to distort your recording, switch on the -10 dB pad to attenuate the input level.

The lightweight, metal-bodied NTG4+ includes a mic clip for easy placement on a mic stand or boompole. Alternatively, mount the NTG4+ in the Rode SM4-R shockmount or Rode PG2-R pistol grip (both available separately) to impede the transfer of vibrations in boompole or handheld applications.

The NTG4+ has a foam windscreen to reduce unwanted wind noise from breezes, fans, heaters, and air conditioners. For maximum reduction of handling noise and wind noise in indoor or outdoor environments, consider the Rode Blimp furry windshield and shockmount suspension system (available separately).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Are there any audio quality differences between the NTG4+ and NTG?

A: Both are excellent

Q: 2. Can a AA battery be put inside the Rode NTG4?

A: The NTG4 (no +) is only phantom powered. In theory the mic could be powered via a AA battery operated source like a Tascam or Zoom recorder for instance but the mic does NOT take batteries whatsoever. I own an NTG4+ and it is my favorite mic. It is super versatile and the rechargeable battery inside lasts forever.

Q: 3. I know that technically shotgun mics are meant for outdoor use, but does anyone have any experience with how well or poorly the rode ntg4 does inside, as in have you used it on your production indoor with satisfying enough results?

A: We bought ours primarily for indoor use and have been very satisfied with the results. We have a loud HVAC unit and the built in filter on the mic took away that sound and kept great clarity.

Q: 4. I am looking to use this with a Saramonic SmartRig with a TRRS to TRS adapter to avoid buying the Sony XLR-K2M. Will it work?

A: The RODE NTG4+ Shotgun Microphone is compatible for use with the Saramonic SmartRig+ 2-Channel XLR Microphone Audio Mixer with the 3.5mm TRRS connector. It may also be compatible for connection to the 3.5mm TRS mic input on your DSLR or mirrorless camera. If you are only going to use the NTG4+ mic with your camera, you can connect the mic directly to the camera's 3.5mm mic input. Power the mic with its internal battery and use a cable with XLR female and 3.5mm TRS male connectors like the Kopul XRSM 3-Pin XLR Female to 3.5mm RA Stereo Mini-Plug Cable - 1.5' (B&H # KOXRSM015B), which is a good length for mounting on the camera, or use a longer length if you want to use the mic off-camera, on a boompole or stand.

Q: 5. I'm new to shotgun microphones and need some info. What are the scenarios(preferably with examples) where I'd need to absolutely use the battery power of NTG4+? My camera is Sony a7II and recorder would be Zoom H5. The shotgun will mostly be used in a boom setup but it'd be nice to use it on-camera sometimes. I understand that NTG4+ has both Phantom and battery power. Is there are reason to pick the NTG4+ over the NTG4, in my scenario? Is there any advantages/disadvantages of using battery power over phantom power or vice versa?

A: The only time you would require the battery power of the NTG4+ is if you did not have access to phantom power. Powering via phantom power is usually preferred by most as it is one less battery to worry about. Also, there may be some coloration to the tonal characteristics of the NTG4+ microphone as the battery depletes, where as the NTG4 is receiving constant power thru another source; in your case the Zoom H5. Keep in mind if you are powering the microphone with phantom power by way of the Zoom H5, the battery time usage on the recorder will be affected.

Q: 6. Would this mic work with my Sony adapter for my A7s? It has an xlr in??

A: The NTG4+ will work with an XLR adapter that is able to provide 48 volts phantom power to the mic.

Q: 7. is it includes these microphone wind shild

A: It actually comes with the foam windshield. It will the do the job inside, but it's not very effective outside. I recommend buying a separate windshield.

Q: 8. Issue invoices to Mexico?

A: Yes this is available for shipping to Mexico.

Q: 9. 1) Can i connect NTG4+ to my rodelink filmmaker wireless transmitter?2) When connected directly to a sony a7r3 camera, will it sound good? or Preamp/external recorder is a must?

A: The 4+ supplies its own power, so if the rodelink receiver is plugged into the camera, plugging the mic directly into the camera will make absolutely no difference. The only benefit of using the transmitter would be to get the mic closer to the audio source. But that doesn't seem to apply here.

Q: 10. Considering this microphone has an internal battery, it doesn't seem like it would need +48v phantom power. Therefore, would it work with the Sony XLR-K2M XLR Adapter Kit?

A: The NTG4 is able to be powered via internal battery or externally via phantom power from the source. This mic can be used with the Sony XLR-K2M in either manner.

Overall very satisfied with purchase. The NTG4+ was an upgrade from the NTG2 model. We operate a small video production company and it will be used for boom operation on interviews and sound on location shoots. To date the NTG4+ has met all expectations from the Rode product. The only bump in the road on this order was the first mic sent from B & H was defective. After contacting Rode, and yes, actually talking with a Rode technician to troubleshoot the mic, it was determined that it was defective. B & H was contacted, a return was authorized almost immediately and within a week I had a replacement mic. Thank you B&H as well as Rode for your professional and prompt assistance and service.

Product was purchased to complete an ENG rig with a LUMIX GH4 DSLR to produce 4K video. Mic Was tested three ways:1. direct connection to LUMIX GH4 produced very good results with very low background noise from GH4 preamp.2. Second test was with JuiceLink RM222. Produced EXCELLENT results with audio recorded at -12db and no discernible background noise.3. On/Off Axis test to determine coverage and signal rejection using a crunch shot. All in all a great Shotgun Mic

Amazing mics. But I'm a Rode lover so I could be biased.

I made a wireless boom pole with this mic. Products to make this happen was the ride ntg4 , boom pole with internal xlr cable, and the tascam dr-10x. Worked like a charm. Love the directional audio that cuts through a ton of noise.

Superior build quality, amazing audio, and long lasting interior battery: everything you could ask for in a mic! I've had no issues with it since I've purchased it.

This mic sounds incredible. I am very, very happy with it. Use it for interview style videos. If issue while using BMPCC4K, try powering cam and mic off, unplugging, and let set for 5 or more mins. Worked for me when gain controls wouldn't work, and when sound was extremely low or not present at all.

Super helpful, love the mic, after doing a ton of research I know the NTG3 is a higher quality sound but for this budget range, the NTG4 seems to be the best.
