Q: 1. re multi track mode, does it make 3 seperate files (L/R, L1, L2), or is it all mixed onto a stereo file?

A: In multi file mode, the files are stored in separate files. And there is also a stereo file mode which you can combine all track in one file.

Q: 2. Can I connect an external and better quality preamp without sound degradation?

A: I don't see why not. The preamps on the H5 are pretty good, but certainly not the best. You could probably turn the gain down on the H5 and the gain up on the output of your external preamp for minimal distortion, and record at 24bit 96khz. If you want stereo or multi-track (you need a adapter for the H5, the H6 has 4 XML-ins), you'd have to have preamp with an out for each track.

Q: 3. If I'm using a lav mic (via XLR input) should I choose Stereo or Multi to record? Which will give the best results?

A: Choose stereo mode.

Q: 4. can the XYH-5 capsule be decoupled into a L/R mono, or does it always have to be in stereo?

A: I don't believe it can be decoupled, however if you have audio editing software you can separate the channels that way.

A: Yes, the Sennheiser MKE 600 Shotgun Microphone can be connected to the Zoom H5 Portable Handy Recorder and used to record audio directly to the H5 Recorder.

A: This can be used by itself and the audio synced in post or an output can be run directly to the GH5 from the recorder if needed.

A: The manual does not indicate that the TRS inputs1/2 are balanced. It says the tip is hot. So I expect they are not balanced.
