A: For those two uses, I would go 50. But that's me.I did a recent newborn session (5D3) and brought along the 35A. Also brought a 14, 24-70, 85L, and 70-200. I got keepers from all of those lenses, but by far the Sigma 35 was my most used. It let me get close, play with perspective, and include some of the environment while taking candids & natural poses while the parents interacted with baby.However, when I posed the baby formally, I usually ended up with longer focal lengths: 70mm and 85mm. Babies are small; no problem fitting them in the frame. :) And for portraits of bigger kids and adults, I much prefer a 50 to 35. It seems a more natural perspective and it's easier to isolate the subject.
