Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is there an "auto" option for recording input level, instead of having to set it manually?

A: Yes, the Zoom H5 does have options for auto-recording and it can automatically set the input level. This feature can be very useful, but it depends on what you will be recording because you do not want to have the recorder stop if it does not hear any sound, then start recording again when it does. What you can do is use the auto-record function to see how it sets the input level and then you can go back to manual mode and set the input level the same way or adjust it as needed. That way you will not have to worry about the recorder stopping and starting at the wrong times. Use the auto mode to teach you how to set the input levels so you can adjust them manually in order to get the best results for your recording applications.

Q: 2. I want to record video unto a DSLR from a RodeLink lav (3.5mm output through a Rode XLR converter), while recording ambient sound at the same time with its built-in microphones. Will the H5 do it, or do I need the H6? Which is the optimal recorder (low-noise, quality preamp) for this purpose?

A: You may plug the lav into the H5 and use that and the built in mics at the same time.

Q: 3. I heard bigger SD cards have slower start/boot times. what SD card does everyone use? how many gigs and brand? how long was the start up time?

A: Start-up time can vary from a few seconds to a minute or more. Stay with SanDisk cards that are no larger than the project demands. Stick with SDHC cards no larger than 32GB. 16GB or smaller work well for most projects.

Q: 4. Anyone knows if the interior depth of 7.6 includes all the protective padding or are those 7.6 of free space? I have a light that is exactly 7.6 tall and don't know if it will fit or if I need to take all the padding out in order for it to fit (which will defeat the purpose of getting this case)Thanks!

A: The light won't fit once you remove the thicker portion of the padding.

Q: 5. What is the frequency response?

A: I'm sorry, but Zoom does not list frequency response specs for the H5 or for the XYH-6 microphone capsule.

Q: 6. Can I connect Sennheiser ME66/K6 mic to this?

A: Yes. It has 2 xlr inputs.

Q: 7. Will the rode videomic rycote work flawlessly with this. And is this an worthy upgrade to my H1?

A: It should. You'll be able to plug it in, and play with the levels and such off the recorder. This should be a sufficient upgrade for you. This recorder has multiple functions in it, and it's form factor feels amazing.

Q: 8. So I am looking into buying my audio equipment and I am confused on what I should buy. Should I get the Zoom H5, Rode VideoMic Pro or should I buy an audio kit with boom pole? Or should I buy all three?

A: Dear Bryce. The zoom H5 is a recording device, or capture device. It's like a tape recorder, a nagra from the old days, except its digital. It has two little microphones on it which can come off. It has xlr inputs and 1/4 inch inputs for mics. On other words, you can attach anything to this device, like wireless receivers that take a signal from a Mic which you place on an actor, or, you could take a wireless signal from a Mic on the end of a boom pole. You can also run cable to the Mic and plug in directly to this device. So, for movie making this allows the sound person to be independent from the camera. All you need to do to make it easy to sync up later is use sticks at the beginning of a take, or the end. Do you follow me?.?.? Good.

Q: 9. Is this a good device for recording Live karaoke with it's built in Mics. Is it too Much of a device or too little? I am new to these devices and want to truly hear how I sound while singing. Not while I am singing. and hearing my self in my head

A: This recorder is a great choice for capturing either the live performance in the room with the built-in mics, or for connecting the inputs on the bottom to a mixer or speaker output for a direct recording.

Q: 10. zoom h5 play sideloaded audio files?

A: Yes it will. It can playback files from an SDHC memory card.

Fantastic Case!!! We use this case to keep radio programming equipment secure, dry, and neat. The pick-and-pluck foam allows for the snug fit that is needed for the laptop and other devices. Multiple levels of foam allow us to use it in as a multi-tier case. This is the 4th Pelican case we have purchased in 6 months. Love them!!!

I use this for my small videography/photography company. It is GREAT! I have 2 cameras, 8 batteries, an LCDVF, 2 battery chargers, 3 filters and 4 lenses all very well protected inside of this case. Great buy.

I purchased this case to protect delicate electro-optical instruments from the riggers and indignities implicit with common carrier shipping. I wouldn't trust anything less that a Pelican case. I have lost count of the number of Pelican cases I have purchased over time and all of them have performed without a flaw

I use this one case for my 280mm quadcopter, radio, fpv goggles, battery charger, tools, etc. I just set objects on top of the pick-n-pull foam and used a knife to trace them out. Good sturdy construction without being to big to carry around.

I own two and use them to carry video projectors. It is very easy to shape the foam and the case is strong, lightweight and very protective.

I use this case for to protect sensitive radio gear during transit. As a field communications officer, I have come to rely on Storm for durability, reliability and ease of use (still the easiest latches in the world). The iM2700 is about as bit as you'd want to go without adding wheels. Careful not to overload as it can get heavy.

Wanted someplace to store my camera and lenses. This will work good. Cutting out the foam is easy. The hardest part was figuring how to layout my stuff. This is a big case and feels a bit cramped in my truck but a smaller one wouldn't let me bring all my lenses.

I am a film maker and I use this case to transport camera gear including bodies, lenses, and a monitor. I wouldn't trust anything else with my equipment!

I ordered this case to protect my telescope and other sensitive items that would be transported frequently, this case did not disappoint. I love the weather seal, tough exterior, and roomy cushy interior. The pluck n pull foam makes it extremely versatile to fit almost anything just right. The latches make it a guarantee that the case will never open accidentally but open rather easily with a simple press of a finger. There were several other brand options and a cheaper price but from now on Pelican will be my only case of choice.
