Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. In multi-track recording mode, can I set one channel to record a line-level input, while the other channel receives a mic-level signal?

A: Input 1 and 2 (XLR connectors) are two mono inputs. Each has a seperate gain control knob on the body of H5. It is absolutely possible to set one channel to record at line level and the other to record at mic level. There is also a stereo line/mic input (the L/R input) on the XYH-5 mic module that is shipped with H5. This stereo input (TRS connector) has only one gain control knob. The knob is on the mic module, not on the body of H5. This knob adjust recording levels of both stereo channels of the TRS input at the same time. Therefore it is not possible to record the two channels of the L/R input at different levels (theoretically you can use a split-cable with in-line physical attenuators. But I do not recommand you do this). And since the L/R channel has its own knob on the mic module, it is also possible that you record stereo at line level from the L/R input while at the same time record at mic level with the XLR inputs.P.S. The capability of recording different channels at different levels is not determined by in which mode you are recording (multi-track or stereo). The capability of recording different channels at different levels is determined by the gain control knobs. The multi-track and stereo recording mode are about how the recorded files are stored in the memory card. In multi-track mode, recording from the L/R stereo input is stored as a stereo file while recordings from the 1 and 2 inputs are stored as two seperate mono files. In stereo mode you can also record more than two channels. But if there are more than two channels recorded, all channels will be recorded together into a single stereo file. In multi track mode, you are able to adjust record volumes after recording since all channels are stored in seperate files. In stereo modes, if you are recording more than two channels, you have to pay serious attention to the gain control knobs since you are not able to adjust volumes independently AFTER recording. If more than two channels are recorded at stereo mode, at least one channel will be mixed with another channel in the stereo file.

Q: 2. Does this do auto-levels? Or is that only the H4nSP?

A: The unit can automatically raise low-level input signals and lower high-level input signals. See pages 94-95 in the owner's manual:a href= http://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/92798.pdf target= _blank http://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/92798.pdf/a

Q: 3. How well does this unit handle very loud low end frequencies aka lots of bass? I have an event that needs to be recorded at highest quality on a budget. Or any suggestions which field recorder would do the highest quality job for the lowest price? Thanks!

A: I cannot speak to the frequency response of the built in mics. I have mainly used the unit with external mics and also have yet to do any music recording. The dialog that I have recorded is exceptionally clear and full frequency. (as full as the spoken word becomes)

Q: 4. Does this work with the Sennheiser G3 Wireless Lavs?

A: The Sennheiser G3 wireless systems can be connected to the recorder via the XLR inputs. The connection cable is included with the wireless system. If you are simply looking to use the lavalier mic included with the system wired directly to the recorder, this will require an adapter, the MZA 900P. This will convert the mini connector to XLR as well as convert the phantom power to the mic.

Q: 5. Does this make 2 left and right mono channel? Meaning, will it make exact same left and right channel like you can do in Zoom Hn4?

A: Yes.

Q: 6. Is this a good device for recording Live karaoke with it's built in Mics. Is it too Much of a device or too little? I am new to these devices and want to truly hear how I sound while singing. Not while I am singing. and hearing my self in my head

A: This recorder is a great choice for capturing either the live performance in the room with the built-in mics, or for connecting the inputs on the bottom to a mixer or speaker output for a direct recording.

Q: 7. When taking of the capsules, what is the best way to protect the contacts? Is there a product for this particular purpose? Thanks.

A: There is not. I recommend placing them in heavy-duty plastic zip lock (freezer)bags or photo lens pouches.

Q: 8. I just recently bought a DSLR camera and was wondering if anyone had used the XY mic for vlogs or where you need to focus on someone for sound in an environment that's is louder than normal. Is the XY mic okay or should I invest in the shotgun attachment as well?

A: I'm with ROBERT W. on this. Also, the XY records stereo which, to my ear, is usually problematic in loud environments. I use a Rode VideoMic Pro on my DSLR within 5-10 feet of the speaker which captures audio nicely. I'd like to add a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG2 to use with my Zoom for primary sound and then use the Rode VideoMic Pro with my 80D for reference audio. I think this would provide the most flexibility for the run-and-gun and interview-type video work I do.

Q: 9. Can this be combined with the Zoom EXH-6 to give it a total of 4 XLR inputs?

A: Yes, you can use the EXH-6 module with the Zoom H5 to enable recording of up to four external mic and/or line level signals simultaneously.

Q: 10. Is the H5 compatable with the Nikon D3300?

A: The H5 line out port can feed over any male-male 3.5mm cord to the mic in port of the D3300. But putting the H5 atop a D3300 seems bulky/top-heavy, and the H5's capsule mics pick up a ton of handling noise. (You can reduce this a fair amount by turning on the H5's high-pass filter, but this trims any sounds your subjects make below the cut-off frequency selectable from 80 to 120 Hz.) The H5 works best when mounted by itself, then never touched while recording. If you just want to upgrade the D3300's built-in mic, think about the Rode Micro, or similar mics. The Micro is a better price-point match to the D3300 (than is the H5), is small and light, requires no batteries, and comes with a dead cat windsock for outdoor use (prevents wind sounds from drowning out your subjects). Or, if you really want to spend a few hundred, consider a short shotgun like the Rode video mic pro or something similar by Sennheiser. The sound upgrade is noticeable (from the Micro) and they add more direction selectivity, so you can avoid recording more ambient distraction noises (at the expense of frequency-coloring the reduced-volume ambient noises that get recorded, but the net result is worth it in noise settings).Keith's right about the H5 recording better (far less compressed) sound, but it mostly only matters if you plan to adjust your audio in post, such as removing white noise, hums, whines, etc. (using software like Adobe Audition or the freeware Audacity). That can make nice improvements in listenability, but most folks using a D3300 aren't looking for that much fuss.

As always Pelican cases dont dissapoint. Great seal, durable to any airline gorrilla suitcase handler standards and light enough take anywhere.

We have dozens of Pelican transit cases, and this Storm case is one of the best. The latches hold up better to abuse then the regular 16xx Pelican series. The cases all have lifetime guarantees and Pelican sends us replacement latches for free when needed, but we have never had any problems with the iM2750 cases.

The case is really nice looking, light enough to carry something of equal weight, and easy to handle. It will interesting to see how it will be handled through the airports.

the Pelican Storm brand first got my attention because of it's smooth clean finish, in comparison to the original Pelican brand. After comparing their qualities, I decided to purchase... and will continue to. It looks great, it's lighter and it's easier to snap in the lock than Pelican's butterfly lock. Moreover, I hear it's just as strong.

I use this case to carry all of my extra assorted cables, bags of connectors, AC power extension cords, camera tripods etc. I really like the push button quick release feature on the 4 securing closure tabs. Absolutely indestructible case. Top Quality.

I have about 20 of these boxes and they hold up great. The manufacturer is hassle free if you actually do need to change a part.
