Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Is the image shown the actual photo of the lens? What exactly does this used lens come with?

A: The photo is a stock photo from Canon's website. Used ones, depending on their condition, may exhibit cosmetic blemishes, but in most cases come list the accessories that come with it as well as a 90-day B&H used item warranty. For more information, please check the "in the box" section of the used item listing found on the right side of the overview.

Q: 2. Will this lens work well with the canon R5 with the mount adapter.

A: Yes, the Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS (Image Stabilizer) USM Lens will work well with the Canon EOS R5 Mirrorless Camera (BH #CAER5) so long as you have an EF to RF mount adapter, such as the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R (BH #CAMAEFRF).

Q: 3. Anyone use this with the Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM Lens and if so with what success? I primarily use manual focus so dont care about auto focus.

A: I use this lens extensively, mostly for birding and wildlife. It's an amazing lens when working close, it focuses down to about 5 feet for near macro photos, especially with a 1.4 X or 2 X tele-converter behind it. I've also used it for a few landscape images, and it works very well then as well. I'd say that it is an excellent lens, but there seems to be a soft spot in it from about 20 feet to 50 feet, where the images it produces aren't as sharp as I get with my other lenses, but that seems to depend on the subject and other conditions. It is my primary bird in flight lens and on my 7D Mk II most of the time. It is a bit tricky to manually focus it, small movements of the focusing ring make large differences, but once you get the hang of it, it does work well. Hope this helps.

Q: 4. i want to know how it compares to the Sigma dg 500mm lens i have, is it the same sharpness if so i will stick with my 500 sigma?

A: in all fairness I really can only remark on the canon 300 f4 lens as I do not own the Sigma 500, to be honest it would be hard to compare the two as both are different focal lengths so its an apple to oranges comparison in that respect ,however as far as the 300 f4 canon goes I am totally happy with its performance as far as sharpness ,image stabilization (as others have mentioned its a litttle noisy & its an older version of IS ) easily hand hold hold able . I have used it to photograph small birds and have occasionally used it for weddings where my 70-200 2.8 is lens is not long enough .

Q: 5. what is the weight of this lens?

A: Canon Telephoto EF 400mm f/2.8L IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens has a total weight of 5370 g/189.4 oz

Q: 6. Will this lens autofocus work using 1.4 and 2.0 extender using Canon 7D MII body?

A: Yes, the Telephoto EF 300mm f/2.8L IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens will autofocus using Canon Extender EF 1.4X III and Canon Extender EF 2X III using Canon 7D MII DSLR camera.

Q: 7. Will this work on a Canon 90D?

A: Yes it is compatible with the 90D.

Q: 8. How much does the detachable tripod collar weigh?

A: 4.1 oz or 117 gram

Q: 9. Does the 300mm f/4.0 IS USM lens work with an extender 1.4x II on a 60D camera body?

A: Yes, the 300 mm f4 IS lens will function very well with a 1.4 X extender. It will slow the auto-focus down, but it will still auto-focus. That combinations worked very well for me while shooting wildlife, with the extra bonus of being very close to being a macro lens. The extender doesn't change the close focusing ability of the lens, so you have a 420 mm lens that focuses down to just under 5 feet.

Q: 10. I am interested in getting this lens for use on a Sony A7-II, as there is no E-mount equivalent. Does anyone have experience using this with a Metabones or Sigma MC-11 adapter? Does autofocus work with either of those on a Sony?

A: When using a 3rd party lens adapter and used to mate the lens and camera from two different companies, the issue always is the speed of the AF performance. As of now, even the very best is behind OEM performance. That being said, the best Metabones adapter with this lens should prove very satisfactory. While Sigma will not support the use of the MC-11 with other manufacturer lenses, many users have reported success with the MC-11 with non-Sigma lenses while an equal number have reported failure. Generally, the latest model lenses seem to work. We could find no reports of the MC-11 and this older design lens unfortunately.
