Using the tripod ring will keep the rig balanced, and the three-way head adjusts tightly, so you don't have to worry about the weight of your gear causing the setup to rotate quickly downward because of a loose connection. I find this tripod to be very sturdy; my only two wishes are 1) that it had spikes on the bottom, which it doesn't, and 2) that it had stabilizing braces in the middle to ensure all leg positions are consistent. The second of these is minor for the majority of my usage, but spikes would be really nice! (Don't expect the pan/tilt head to be really smooth - it's not suitable for video usage, generally, except maybe for a very loose level pan.)
