If you set it to the TTL mode there is nothing required for you to do, the camera and the flash will always communicate with each other to give the best exposure. In manual mode you have the option of selecting the distance that your subject will be at, and the flash will then suggest the best aperture for you to set it at based on that distance.

A: Even though I purchased this unit to work with a Nikon camera, I believe my observation also applies to the model designed for Canon cameras. Operation is not completely silent but it is not noisy either.
