Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. besides price, why would you want a compact lever-release vs a full size lever?

A: Good question, they really don't make it very clear. According to the RRS website, the compact edition comes with the B2-40 LR lever release style quick release clamp while the full-size edition comes with the B2-AS II 60mm lever style quick release clamp . If you check the RRS website for those parts individually, you can see the differences. The full-size clamp has jaws that are about 0.5 longer than the compact clamp. The weights are also slightly different. There's a thread on DPReview (id 2510302) that suggests the difference doesn't matter if you're just going to use an L-plate. In that case, you can probably go for the compact version.I'm not fully confident though, so take this with a grain of salt.

Q: 2. Can the tightening knob be repositioned?

A: No the knob can not be repositioned.

Q: 3. Do you give anything up with the Panning Head - stability, size of plates that can be used, and so forth?

A: This is Really Right Stuff: each item is perfect. This one only adds some bulk.

Q: 4. Will the compact lever clamp work with Small Rig L Bracket? Would it possibly be too tight or too loose?

A: While this should accommodate arca-swiss plates from any brand, the RRS lever-release clamps are engineered for best fit with their own plates and L-brackets and are not recommended by RRS.

Q: 5. Would this usable on #075 tripod?

A: Yes this would work on your Manfrotto 075, the head has a 3/8" female thread and the tripod has a 3/8" male screw so it will mount no problem.

Q: 6. Is this needed or advised for portraits?

A: You can certainly use this for portraits but it also depends on the camera and lens you are using. A lightweight camera system would be fine but a head with a heavier load capacity would be more appropriate for a heavier camera system.

Q: 7. Would this head be suitable for a 4x5 field camera?

A: It can work with 4x5. I would get a larger one and one that offers more precision in the leveling functionality like Acratech Large Leveling Base BH #ACLLB

Q: 8. Are they compatible to the standard acra swiss type place?

A: They seem to fit most arca-swiss plates that are trapazoid in shape (narrower at the top of the plate, and then wider at the bottom). As long as the clamps can hold the plate in place , you should be fine. I use one from a meFoto which is of the arca-swiss type and it works fine (mine is a screw-lock but I think the latch locks work the same too (the advantage of the screw-lock is the clamp can adjust to the plate as its locking it into place. Not sure if the latch lock can do this or not).

Q: 9. does this head eliminate the need for a leveling base?

A: The Really Right Stuff BH-55 Ball Head with Lever-Release Panning Clamp has panning at the top which allows for level panning. This can negate one of the uses of the leveling base.

Q: 10. What's the difference between the black and chrome quick-release levers?

A: The only difference is the color.
