Q: 1. Hello! I had pretty fair results using the ES-1 with my old Micro Nikkor 40mm 2.8 G in DX to copy slides...But now I have a Sony a7c full frame... Is there a way to still use the ES-1? with the Sony a7c? Maybe an FE 50 macro & adapter ring?? Maybe a Nikon G to Sony FE adaptor and use the old DX Nikkor/ES-1? but then I'm back to APS-C? Does anyone have a winning combo for ES-1 to A7c? Or a reasonably priced way to digitize slides?
A: The biggest problem is that you cannot move the ES1 forwards and backwards to account for the minimum focusing distance of different lenses and also to account for changes in angle of view. It requires a ton of DIY with different lenses and close up filters to make it work with different lenses. To digitize slides at a reasonable price I would recommend using a macro lens and placing the slides on a light box such as this one and taking the photo of the slide either hand holding the camera or on a tripod. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1325594-REG/kaiser_202453_slimlite_plano_5000k_battery.html
Q: 2. Does this come with a QR plate?
A: No. Only the image shown.
Q: 3. Has anyone used the Tamron 60MM F2 macro lens with this adapter?
A: No. I used it with a Nikon 60mm lens.
Q: 4. Will the es-1 work on my Nikon CoolPics 5700?
A: I do not Think so. I have a 55mm Macro Nikkor Lens and a PK-13 adapter...Works fine but does get the full frame of a slide. Maybe 80 t0 90 %.From what I was told it was made for that setup ( 55mm Macro Nikkor Lens and a PK-13 ) ! It screws into the threads of a 52mm.I would also like to add that I am shooting with a Nikon 5200. That may make a difference as well because the size of the Sensor and distance from the slide to the sensor ( It helps to have a skylight filter ).
Q: 5. How to the results compare to that of the plustek scanner?
A: Never used a Plustek scanner, so I cannot compare. However, when the ES-1 is used with a DX camera (Nikon D500 for me) and the recommended Nikkor lenses (I used a 40mm Micro with 52mm filter threads, no extensions), the results are excellent.
Q: 6. Do I need the extension tube PK-13 with ES-1 used with the 60mm Micro Nikkor using Nikon dslr with crop sensor?
A: No, the 60mm Micro-Nikkor lenses focus to 1:1 without an extension tube. And with a DX sensor, you'll actually only need less than 1:2 magnification if you're duplicating slides, because your original will be more than twice as big as your sensor. The extension tube will allow you to increase magnification, you'll actually need less magnification due to crop factor. I don't know if you'll be able to get the whole slide in the smaller DX frame with this setup (you'll have to experiment and see), you would actually be better off with the 55mm Micro-Nikkor, which is 1:2 magnification without the extension tube, closer to what you need for a DX camera to duplicate 35mm slides.
Q: 7. thread size?
A: Nikon does not list the tread size for the Nikon ES-1 Slide Copying Adapter as it is compatiable by attaching it to the AF Micro-Nikkor 60mm f/2.8D lens with the BR-5 Ring or the Micro-Nikkor 55mm f/2.8 lens.
Q: 8. does it include the slide holder?
A: Yes.
Q: 9. Will this work with an 50mm 1:1 and format size DX?
A: I am assuming you are using Nikon equipment and want to copy 35 mm slides at 1:1.By work, if you mean getting a 1:1 magnification with a 50 mm lens on a DX format, to copy 35mm slides - the answer is no. Because of the DX crop factor the lens needs to be further back to get a 1:1 magnification ratio. You need approx 26 to 28 mm more distance to get the 1.0 magnification. The ES-1 is designed for the 55 mm micro AIs or 60mm micro G lens with FX. Use a lens with a 0.67 mag ratio or more on DX and it will become 1.0 when multiplied by the DX crop factor 1.5 x. 1. You can use the PK-13 extension ring which will position the lens further back. But a regular 50 mm lens will be unsharp in the corners due to curvature of the field and probably cannot focus close enough. A flat field lens like the 55 mm micro AIs will work great with the PK-13 extension ring on DX. Be aware the PK-13 needs a lens with an aperture ring because G lenses will not transmit aperture data to the camera with the extension ring in between. 2. Alternately you can use the 40 mm micro lens on DX with ES-1 with no extension tubes. Because of the crop factor the equivalent is 60 mm which is what the ES-1 was designed for to give 1:1 ratio.3. You can also use the 60 mm micro on FX with ES-1 with no extension tubes. If you have a lot of slides and want quality, purchase a newer G type micro lens - 60mm for FX or 40mm for DX, and an ES-1. You can always sell the lens later.....or you may love it so much that you'll sell your regular 50 mm lens! I have the manual focus 55mm micro AIs and hardly ever use the 50 mm 1.4. If you already have a 55 mm micro AIs, purchase a PK-13 for use with ES-1 on a DX.There are many options and if you are unhappy with the purchase, confirm the 30 day trial/return policy before buying. Good luck. It's a fun project. Next topic will be lighting and white balance! :-)
Q: 10. I Just used this adapter with a home made extension tube and macro lens to copy some slides. I used an SB700 flash in slave mode, triggered by the on camera flash on the D90 and aperture priority. On the LCD the copies looked great. But when I copied the RAW and jpg files to the computer, they look awful. Terribly over saturated and orange (I set white balance to flash ). What am I doing wrong? What settings would work better?
A: Hi Karen,Doesn't make sense about that color shift. It must be in the workflow somewhere. I always shoot raw files. I've used my slide copier with a slide light box, even hand held sometimes through a window.Unlike most shooting I do in raw, I leave the white balance on auto. I have been able to make very nice 24 prints from slides.I feel that the flash is overkill, because with the way this copier is mounted and used, it doesn't matter how long your shutter speed is. I had actually began devising a flash set-up at first but prefer the light box, or out the window.
