  • IP67 military specification is an international standard IEC 60529 that classifies the level of protection that is provided against the intrusion of solid objects or dust, accidental contact, and water. The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against access to hazardous parts and the ingress of solid foreign objects. The rating of 6 indicates the highest level of protection - no ingress of dust, complete protection against contact. The second digit indicates the protection of equipment against harmful ingress of water. The rating of 7 (out of 8) ensures that entry of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the case is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to at least 1.0 m of submersion).

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. The mono TRS in Input 1 is balanced, right?

A: The manual does not indicate that the TRS inputs1/2 are balanced. It says the tip is hot. So I expect they are not balanced.

Q: 2. Can I connect an external and better quality preamp without sound degradation?

A: I don't see why not. The preamps on the H5 are pretty good, but certainly not the best. You could probably turn the gain down on the H5 and the gain up on the output of your external preamp for minimal distortion, and record at 24bit 96khz. If you want stereo or multi-track (you need a adapter for the H5, the H6 has 4 XML-ins), you'd have to have preamp with an out for each track.

Q: 3. Can I connect Sennheiser ME66/K6 mic to this?

A: Yes. It has 2 xlr inputs.

Q: 4. using a XLR splitter from channel 1& 2 to a mic, do i use power from both channels or just 1? Any risk of damaging your microphone? i am looking to use 1 channel as back up -16

A: Turn off phantom power, but splitting the input is not recommended. Signal loss and noise might result.

Q: 5. I want to record my film dialogue with my boom mic and connect it to this. dose this have this feature where i can record one track at lower DB and the other normal?

A: Dear Nachoketh, I understand what you are trying to do, you want to separate the same track and record 3db difference between the two. You can do this by splitting the input with a Y connector, but the question I have for you is why do this? A good sound recordist doesn't need two tracks of the same thing because he or she gets it right the first time. Only once did a producer ask me to do that and I was insulted because it implied I didn't know how to record sound. The recordist should wear headphones and hear what is being recorded. You adjust the volume accordingly. This unit is a digital recorder, it is great for voice or music but might offer problems with effects. Large sound, like explosions, or gun shots are tough to record in digital mode because to make them sound correct you need to over-record, but with digital you can't. There are tricks you can do in post by slowing the sound down and pushing the volume. That can work. Good luck. Best, Jonathan Slon.

Q: 6. I just recently bought a DSLR camera and was wondering if anyone had used the XY mic for vlogs or where you need to focus on someone for sound in an environment that's is louder than normal. Is the XY mic okay or should I invest in the shotgun attachment as well?

A: I'm with ROBERT W. on this. Also, the XY records stereo which, to my ear, is usually problematic in loud environments. I use a Rode VideoMic Pro on my DSLR within 5-10 feet of the speaker which captures audio nicely. I'd like to add a shotgun mic like the Rode NTG2 to use with my Zoom for primary sound and then use the Rode VideoMic Pro with my 80D for reference audio. I think this would provide the most flexibility for the run-and-gun and interview-type video work I do.

Q: 7. Can Zoom H5 use a mono mic and convert to stereo automatically, if both channels will be used as same, left and right?

A: The signal will not be converted to stereo but to two channel mono.

Q: 8. Does this do auto-levels? Or is that only the H4nSP?

A: The unit can automatically raise low-level input signals and lower high-level input signals. See pages 94-95 in the owner's manual:a href= http://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/92798.pdf target= _blank http://static.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/92798.pdf/a

Q: 9. Can this be combined with the Zoom EXH-6 to give it a total of 4 XLR inputs?

A: Yes, you can use the EXH-6 module with the Zoom H5 to enable recording of up to four external mic and/or line level signals simultaneously.

Q: 10. How well does this unit handle very loud low end frequencies aka lots of bass? I have an event that needs to be recorded at highest quality on a budget. Or any suggestions which field recorder would do the highest quality job for the lowest price? Thanks!

A: I cannot speak to the frequency response of the built in mics. I have mainly used the unit with external mics and also have yet to do any music recording. The dialog that I have recorded is exceptionally clear and full frequency. (as full as the spoken word becomes)
