Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can this be combined with the Zoom EXH-6 to give it a total of 4 XLR inputs?

A: Yes, you can use the EXH-6 module with the Zoom H5 to enable recording of up to four external mic and/or line level signals simultaneously.

Q: 2. I have a Sony FDR-AX33. Is it necessary to have an adapter (Zoom HS-1)?

A: YYes - this is the recommended adapter: Sony Camera Shoe Mount B&H # SOVCTCSM1

Q: 3. The mono TRS in Input 1 is balanced, right?

A: The manual does not indicate that the TRS inputs1/2 are balanced. It says the tip is hot. So I expect they are not balanced.

Q: 4. Does this kit come with wind blocker?

A: There is a foam rubber thingy included that works fine, but doesn't keep the wind out 100% in all cases. You can buy attachments that are better, but it has worked well for outdoor use for my podcast projects.

Q: 5. Does an SD Card come with the recorder?

A: Yes it does, but it is only a small one. I was using it the other day for an event and we ran out of memory. Best to grab a 16 or 32GB card if you plan to record events over 1 hour.

Q: 6. I am looking into this sound recorder to in-hanse the sound recording of my films. I would primarily use this recorder with a phantom powered shotgun mic. Ive read good and bad reviews about this product and am just wondering if this would be the best sound recorder for the price keeping in mind that I would mostly use it with a phantom powered XLR shot gun mic? Thank you.

A: The word is enhance.

Q: 7. Can I use only one XLR input and still get a stereo track? Or do you need to use both to get stereo?

A: Absolutely. Also make sure to choose the proper settings in the menu while setting up each time you record. The manual is very straight forward.

Q: 8. How well does this unit handle very loud low-end frequencies aka lots of bass? I have an event that needs to be recorded at the highest quality for the least amount of cash. Or does anyone have any other suggestions for a field recorder that has the highest quality recordings to price ratio? Thanks!

A: I haven't used it in those situations you described. I use it mainly for weddings. Vocally its bang on and is very clear and great crisp sound.

Q: 9. Can I connect Sennheiser ME66/K6 mic to this?

A: Yes. It has 2 xlr inputs.

Q: 10. Can I connect an external and better quality preamp without sound degradation?

A: I don't see why not. The preamps on the H5 are pretty good, but certainly not the best. You could probably turn the gain down on the H5 and the gain up on the output of your external preamp for minimal distortion, and record at 24bit 96khz. If you want stereo or multi-track (you need a adapter for the H5, the H6 has 4 XML-ins), you'd have to have preamp with an out for each track.
