I've been using the Canon 15-85 mm lens for a couple years. it's really sharp. Gives some barrel distortion at 15 mm. 85 mm is long enough in most situations.You can compare lenses at sites like pixelpeeper. Download full-size photos, open in Photoshop and zoom in to where you can see pixels. That way you can get a good idea of the quality of many lenses.
