Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. If Recording directly from the mixpre to my camera (a7iii), will the 32bit sound be baked into the SD card of the camera along with the footage, or will the 16bit rate of the internal preamps of my camera take over? Assuming my volume level on the camera is turned down to 1 (minimal)

A: Your better quality 32 bit audio would be on the recorder only. Going into the mic input on your camera from the recorder would not give you the same audio quality as what you get from the recorder.

Q: 2. Does the Mix Pre 3 can record trigger with the Red Komodo?

A: Recording on the Sound Devices MixPre-3 II Field Recorder can be triggered via timecode or HDMI timecode. If the RED Digital Cinema Komodo Camera can output a timecode trigger signal it should be able to trigger recording on the MixPre-3 II.

Q: 3. Can the MixPre 3 II be used to timecode two angle different cameras and thus make them already synced in post?

A: Yes, the MixPre-3 II does have an internal timecode generator that you can use to sync timecode with your cameras.

Q: 4. Can you jam timecode from a camera that sends timecode over hdmi like the Sony FS5 without leaving the hdmi cable plugged in?

A: The MixPre does not see timecode from an external source, unless it is recorded onto an unused audio track. It does have a generator that can feed your other devices, such as a camera.

Q: 5. Will I need to use a di box in order not to experience problems with signal loss/interference, given the outputs being unbalanced? I'm thinking of an ENG setting, recording directly into the camera.

A: Hi Philip. You should not require a DI box to run unbalanced audio into a camera. However, long runs of unbalanced audio (more than about 20 feet) are more susceptible to interference than balanced cables.

Q: 6. Is there a separate timecode out and a separate audio out option, or is it just one dual use output where you have to choose between these two?

A: Hi Richard. There is only one (dual use) output, which is shared between audio and/or timecode. The output function is user-selectable in the OUTPUTS MENU. Sound Devices Support (support@sounddevices.com)

Q: 7. Does anyone know if this unit responds to HDMI start and stop triggers from A Nikon Z6?

A: I have the Nikon Z6 and the MixPre-3 II and updated to the latest firmware on both. I set the Z6 to output timecode through HDMI, set the MixPre to receive HDMI timecode input, and connected the HDMI cable from the Z6 to the MixPre-3 II. The MixPre-3 failed to receive timecodes from the Z6. I also set the MixPre to trigger recording (by setting "HDMI Flag" in the record menu). However, it failed to trigger MixPre recording when I started recording on the Z6. Unfortunately, the MixPre-3 II cannot accept HDMI timecodes or triggers as of this date.

Q: 8. Is there an option to bypass MixPre onboard preamps in case i want to use external preamp?

A: Hi Andrew. Sure, if you want to use an external preamp, just set the XLR input(s) of the MixPre-3 II to LINE level and connect your preamp to the MixPre-3 II.

Q: 9. what external battery can I use?

A: You can use the Sound Devices MX-L Mount sled with several different batteries, including the Watson NP-F770: https://bhpho.to/37r9oUC https://bhpho.to/2MGUYHS l

Q: 10. What does the built in Timecode generator do?

A: Timecode allows you to synchronize the audio recorder with a compatible video camera.
