Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. I want to shoot portraits with this. Is it large enough to use the Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 lens? Or the Sigma 50 1.4 Art lens?

A: This flash is not compatible with Sigma lenses.

Q: 2. My camera body is a Canon 7D - with Sigma lenses. Will the flash fit on these lenses and how does this work for sport action shots?

A: Canon assumes that you are using select Canon macro lenses for macro photography. The ring flash uses a proprietary grip ring mount that is built into the MP-E 65 mm macro lens with a 67 mm adapter available for the EF100 mm macro lenses, or lenses with a 67 mm filter mount. The typical usable range is about 0.79 in to 16 ft with the guide number of 24.6 at f2.8 with ISO 100. This information is available in the flash User's Guide. Obviously using higher ISO settings will give a greater working distance. The low power of this flash unit in comparison to a higher end speedlites with a guide number greater than 100 might make this flash unit unsuitable for sports action shots. Electronic flash is suitable for sports photography only when the light output is high enough to allow a shutter speed and f-stop combination that largely eliminates exposure from the ambient light of the scene, unless the flash is being used only for fill and therefore closely matches the ambient light level. With the maximum shutter sync speed limited with focal plane shutters to typically about 1/200 sec., if the flash output is not high enough to overwhelm the ambient light, there will be motion blur of the subject in the image. High speed sync further reduces the guide number and may restrict the number of exposures due to overheating of the flash unit. Using a camera with a conventional leaf shutter typically allows flash sync at all shutter speeds and would be appropriate for sports photography with flash, but the 7D has a focal plane shutter which has restrictions in this application. Since most sports are in very open areas, there typically will be few large reflective surfaces and the flash light output scatters and is often not as effective requiring the use of a lower guide number for good exposure. Many speedlites have a zoom capability but are limited. 3rd party beam focusing modifiers are available, but would not work with a ring flash.

Q: 3. Can this unit be used on a Nikon D7100 with Nikor macro lenses?

A: I m terrible sorry for that answer Kevin , It wount fit at all in your nikkor lens , If you have nikon you may go for another brand like Sigma or Metz for a front light macro flash . Nikon used to have a similar flash but they cuit the fabrication of it. My apologys and make me any question of it again . I have bouth of the macro lens and macro twin flash nikon and canon to work with.

Q: 4. Is there a difference in performance between the slide and slide lite? Or is the only difference the width of the strap?

A: Yes, the lite is narrower.

Q: 5. Hi, I am planning to buy Tamron Telephoto SP AF 180mm f/3.5 Di LD IF Macro Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS and wondering if this ring flash will fit and work on this lens or can you please specify what adaptor to use if I need one?

A: Yes, the Canon MR-14EX flash unit can be attached to the Tamron 180mm f3.5 macro lens using a special adapter ring made by Canon to fit on lenses with a 72mm sized filter diameter. See the link below for details on the required adapter ring: http://bhpho.to/JyRTj2

Q: 6. Are there other ring adapters that I can use for other sized lenses than the macrolite adapter sizes? For example, a 62mm macro lens.

A: Yes there are. If you regard the Accessories tab on this flash's product link, under the header Other flash accessories you will see adapter ring options for 52mm, 58mm, 67mm, and 72mm. To adapt it to a lens with a 62mm filter thread size, you would need to purchase the 67mm adapter ring for the flash, and then use a 62-67mm step-up ring to connect to that. See the two links below for the required adapter rings to connect it to your 62mm lens:http://bhpho.to/1frDLaahttp://bhpho.to/1lVIgRi

Q: 7. Can this be used with Canon Mark 11 Lense 24-105mm 4Lwith IS ?

A: Probably not, to use the flash on any lens other than the original 100mm F2.8 non-IS lens you need a macro lite ring adapter and BH doesn't carry a 77mm one so I don't think Canon makes one in that size. The only sizes listed are 52, 58, 67, and 72mm. The 67 is the most popular as it fits the 100mm F2.8 IS macro lens. The 24-105mm lens has a 77mm filter thread size

Q: 8. Is this compatible with the Canon EF-S 35 f/2.8 Macro IS STM lens?

A: Yes, but you will need two adapters to get it to mount onto the lens. You will also need to use the ES-27 lens hood that came with the lens hood as you will need to mount these adapters onto the hood's front threads. Item 1, any of the Canon Macrolite adapters, like this one: https://bhpho.to/34tA33y Item 2, a stepup ring from 49mm to the same size as the Macrolite adapter: https://bhpho.to/3yQInZe

Q: 9. Has anyone used this flash in High Speed Sync mode and if so, what results did you get? Was the flash powerful enough to support at least 1/500th of a second at say, F/16? Thanks!

A: Yes, absolutely. Of course this answer is relative to the flash to subject distance. If you're trying from 20 feet away, probably not, but if you're using it for regular macro work or even up to a few feet away, it will.

Q: 10. I have a 100mm non-is Canon macro lens, with Canon hood. Will I need to remove the hood to use this flash?

A: yes
