The JDV Mk 5 Direct Box from Radial Engineering is a two-channel discrete class‐A active direct box which is primarily intended for use with bass and acoustic instruments but is also capable of handling other types of signals. The JDV retains the original zero‐negative feedback topology, yet adds an array of features. Its design includes two switchable inputs, each with a volume control and signal presence & overload LEDs, plus a fully variable high-pass filter to tame excessive bottom end resonance. The channel-one balanced input with 48V phantom power allows a microphone to be combined with the second channel (and adjustable phase control) to produce a natural sound. Selecting between the two inputs can be done using the front panel AB select or by adding an optional JR2 remote control. This also enables you to mute the output to change instruments or quiet down the system between sets. The unit is also equipped with a line level drive option for direct recording, a Drag control load correction for magnetic pickups, and a 10 Mohm option to maximize the tone with piezos. It is conveniently rack-mountable for touring.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. Can I hook up a compressor to the Insert send/recv and will the compressor be applied across all 4 inputs? Whats the Setup steps

A: Yes, if you connect a compressor to the 1/4" insert of the Radial Engineering KL-8 Rackmount Keyboard Mixing Station, it would be applied across all four (4) input channels.

Q: 2. How much do the volume knobs attenuate the output signal? Can it reduce a line level signal to mic level?

A: The Radial Engineering MIX 2:1 2-Channel Audio Combiner & Mixer (BH # RAPSSM) cannot reduce a signal from line to microphone level.

Q: 3. Will this unit work if there is a switch in between the TX and RX units?

A: No it will not. This is point to point the TX needs to connect directly to the RX

Q: 4. Regarding the below, could you please explain to me, a novice, what it means to be "wired in parallel with the XLR input." 1/4" TRS Input. Connects from your recording workstation and is suitable for both lo-Z and hi-Z sources. Wired in parallel with the XLR input.

A: The parallel wiring means the 1/4" TRS input and the XLR input are wired so they are independent of each other and each have their own signal path.

Q: 5. What are the dimmentions of the unit? Radial Keylargo

A: The dimension of the Radial Engineering Keylargo as published on the manufacturer's website are: 8.4 x 5 x 1.9 .

Q: 6. Can this be used to convert a headphones level signal (DDJ 800) to a pro line level signal (+4dBu)?

A: The Radial Engineering StageBug SB-6 Isolator is not converting or boosting line level signals, but rather converting impedance (Hi-Z to Lo-Z) and eliminating hum in the signal chain.

Q: 7. Does this feed though phantom power?

A: According to the Radial manual: Although the DM1 may work in some cases with condenser mics, we do not recommend it due to power on/off transients which could cause the sound system to pop when switching. To be safe, only use the DM1 with dynamic mics.

Q: 8. When using two condenser mics will it pass through phantom power to each individual microphone?

A: No. The Radial Engineering MIX 2:1 2-Channel Audio Combiner & Mixer blocks phantom power.

Q: 9. Work with dynamic microphones?

A: Yes, dynamic microphones can be used with the Radial Engineering JS-3.

Q: 10. The top surface has a "mono/sum" printed on it. Is there a right-side switch which sums both inputs to one of the outputs?

A: The Mono/Sum switch on the right side of the Radial Engineering Trim-Two Stereo DI with Volume Control converts both outputs to dual mono, so using either output will deliver the same exact mono signal, so you have the option of using both outputs or just one output for your setup.

This is exactly what I was looking for . No hum no noise. Different club every weekend now I don't have to worry about hum. Highly recommended.

Have 4 of them. They work great. Never had a problem.

The box is super simple to use and does not have all the extra switches common on other direct boxes. I was very impressed with the build quality when it arrived. Been using it to run an electric guitar straight into a mixer then into a PA system. The signal is strong and clean without any hums or hiss. It does require phantom power to run and it has a little indicator light to show that it is receiving power. Unlike most active DIs, the ground does not need to be lifted to use phantom. Great active DI thats worth the little extra over the cheap ones.

We use ProDI's and JDI's. This one is my favorite to use because it can get a strong signal out of anything.

I love JDIs. This is the 3rd one. It has some great features like summing a stereo input which make it all the more versatile.
