The AT4050ST from Audio-Technica is a studio-grade side-address stereo microphone that offers terrific flexibility for a variety of applications. The mic housing contains independent cardioid and figure-8 condenser elements, which allows the mic to maintain precise pattern definition across a full frequency range. It also allows you to choose between a left-right stereo output or discrete mid-side signal.

The diaphragms are vapor-deposited with 2-micron thick gold, and undergo a 5-step aging process to ensure years of optimal use. Internal transformerless circuitry helps to eliminate low-frequency distortion and provides excellent correlation of high-speed transients. The housing has a symmetrical design that provides an open acoustical environment to minimize internal reflections.

For additional flexibility, the mic has an 80Hz high-pass filter to reduce low-frequency rumble and hum, as well as a 10dB pad switch, which provides extra headroom when recording loud sound sources. The AT4050ST comes complete with a custom shock mount, an extra-long XLR cable, a dust cover, and a protective carrying case. The mic is also certified by the METAlliance.

Related Questions and Answers

Q: 1. the camcorder include JVC Top Handle Unit with XLR and Audio Control for GY-HM170?

A: Yes.

Q: 2. Can the HM170UA output a live stream just like the HM200 with just a WiFi dongle by connecting to an IP and directly live stream from camera or is the live stream capability only available through the HDMI?

A: The HM170UA does not have the same streaming capabilities as the HM200, you would not be able to connect a dongle directly to it. However it does have a clean HDMI output, so you could set it up for streaming with a capture or streaming device with an HDMI input.

Q: 3. What remote would work for this camera? Do they all use the same port so I can get any one?

A: This camera has a near industry standard 2.5mm LANC connection. This works on most high end consumer Canon, Sony, and JVC camcorders. Many Sony camcorders use a Multi Terminal connection but you can get two cable adapters so you can use any LANC zoom controller such as the VariZoom attached.

Q: 4. What resolution and frame rate does the HDMI port output?

A: The HDMI output is able to send up to a UHD 4K signal at 30fps. It can also output HD at up to 60fps.

Q: 5. The specs for this camera say that you can record in HD 4:2:2 (.MOV) format. I have read somewhere that the .MOV format from this camera can only be edited with Final Cut Pro on an Apple Mac, i.e. you cannot use a Windows based editing software. How true is that?

A: I have been working on this problem for a few weeks or so and finally have a inexpensive WINDOWS 7 - UP NLE solution to the 4.2.2 .mov File format issue - THE ANSWER IS ... MAGIX 2016 Movie Edit Pro (get the Plus version) this software works with the 4K files and the 4.2.2 .mov format as well. What you need to know is as follows, the software is so affordable it should be illegal so no issue there - and it's powerful with tons of features not documented - have no ans why that is but it's worth the effort to learn the software - here's the catch - after you install and activate the software you need to install the free - optional codecs - under the Help heading select - install extra content - and select the 2 additional codecs - MC MPEG2 and MC MPEG4 - the latter you need to decode the 4.2.2 .mov files from this camera - restart the software and it will utilize any of the JVC files. Works great and has a very good render engine so outputs are sharp and clean.

Q: 6. Is there focus peaking for when in manual focus mode (something to show you what is in focus and what isn't)?

A: The GY-HM170UA has a Focus Assist Mode that you can take advantage of. In the Focus Assist Mode the in focus areas are displayed in color to allow for easy and accurate focusing.

Q: 7. I need to use a step-up 62-to-72mm adapter but seems like the hood holder doesn't allow the adapter to screw in. Any idea how to fix that, I think there is no way to remove the holder, unless someone has an idea on how to do that, or alternatives? Thanks

A: The hood on the GY-HM170UA can be removed if needed. To attach a filter, step-up adapter or wide angle lens to this camera's 62mm filter thread you will need to remove the hood. How to remove the hood is demonstrated on page 16 of this manual:http://bit.ly/2deiNa0

Q: 8. Does the GY-HM170ua use the same batteries as the GY-LS300? I have the ls300 and extra batteries and it would be great if I could use those batteries on the HM170.

A: The GY-HM170UA does not use the same batteries as the GY-LS300. Consider the GY-HM200 instead, which is essentially the same camera as the GY-HM170UA, but uses the same battery as the GY-LS300 instead.

Q: 9. Can I change the ISO on this camcorder? I know it’s not a low light camera but can I do anything to help the issue?

A: Unfortunately no. If you are looking to set your light meter, you can set it to ISO 800.

Q: 10. Has anyone used the JVC GY-HM170 for performance work? What are your thoughts?

A: I used it for filming part of a movie 8 Ball Clown and am planning to use it as primary camera for 8 Ball Clown II - I like the quality, not a low light camera, the manual operation takes a bit to get used to but then again all of them do. I bought 2 extra batteries and 128G cards, so I should be able to film quite a bit without stopping. The onboard sound is pretty good - I'm probably adding wireless mics, but its good. I use Bose headphones so I can get better sound and adjust volume. note most of the movie was filmed on a canon t2i - because I just wasn't ready to switch because I had not touched the camera - but I'm more comfortable with it and will practice to get used to it. I did some minor filming for commercials in 4k and that went well - but that was outside in bright light. I will always use a dslr in low low light.I edit in Final Cut - so the video output is easy to bring in and edit - one of the reasons I went with this camera.
