A: Yes the flash will fire as long as it is connected properly, whether in Live View mode or not. Whether it's compatible or not depends upon which camera it is being used with. It is compatible with some and not with others.

A: I tried the flash and it works fine. Haven't as yet tried the modeling light when photographing, but when you turn it on it seems to be bright enough for close work. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
